A Mercedes-Benz is a valuable asset which an owner would want to protect ub the best possible way  from damage or loss. To give owners peace of mind, Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia (MBSM) now offers Mercedes-Benz Protection with two new insurance and takaful solutions. The Star Protect and Star Protect Plus insurance and takaful solutions, as the packages are known, are available at all authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

Repair
A temporary replacement vehicle will be provided if the car has to be at the authorised Mercedes-Benz service centre for repairs for many days.

Replacement vehicle for up to 20 days
The solutions are said to be first-of-its-kind in the premium motor insurance and takaful category, and amongst other things, offer a temporary Mercedes-Benz replacement vehicle benefit for up to 20 days per period of insurance if the insured vehicle is in an authorised Mercedes-Benz workshop for accident repair.

There are also new benefits for Star Protect and Star Protect Plus. These  include a nationwide limitless towing distance and reimbursement of car key replacement costs (today’s sophisticated key fobs are not cheap!). Coverage is also for all authorised drivers and does not require a prior driver name submission to the insurer.

Losing this key is bad enough but at least if you have Star Protect insurance, the replacement cost is covered.

“The entire automotive industry is transforming and motor insurance is preparing for changes as the connected vehicle ecosystem comes into being and as consumer ownership preferences shift. Through our customer-centric approach, not only have we widened our insurance partner base, we deep dived into our current offerings in order to develop a more comprehensive motor insurance coverage for Mercedes-Benz owners,” said Mike Ponnaz, MD of Mercedes-Benz Services Malaysia.

“Our aim is to increase the number of insured and satisfied customers under Mercedes-Benz Protection by offering products which provide owners with greater peace of mind,” he added.

Under the enhanced packages, vehicles will be covered for basic loss or damage such as damage resulting from accidental collision, burglary, housebreaking, theft and attempted theft, or any malicious acts, and liability to third parties, with additional protection for impact damage caused by falling trees due to acts of nature.

No mileage limit for towing assistance
The towing assistance, which includes unlimited towing distance for breakdown and accident, includes one-way toll charges of up to RM30. Under the towing plan, customer can utilize the flood towing for up to six occurrences, 24-hour minor roadside repairs and free assistance in arranging value-added benefits that offer accommodation, taxi transportation, and cross-border towing services. Customers will only have to pay for the value-added benefits if used.

The packages also offer owners compensation for loss of possessions as a result of window snatch theft, flood relief allowance for damage due to flood, and personal accident coverage for the driver and up to 4 passengers.

Compensation will be given for accidental damage to any of the four rims or tyres on the car.

Those who opt for Star Protect Plus will also have coverage for 4 tyres and 4 rims. The coverage is for accidental damage caused by road debris or curbing which can adversely impact the resale value of a car, as well as optimum vehicle performance.

During the Movement Control Period (MCO), virtually all business activities were suspended in Malaysia and for motorists, things like roadtax renewal or transfers of vehicle ownership could not be done as the JPJ (Road Transport Department) was closed.

However, for vehicles that had expired roadtax during the MCP period, the government said that there will be no penalty and the owner could continue using the vehicles on public roads (the same applied to expired driving licences). But insurance coverage is needed at all times.

With the Recovery MCO implemented, the Transport Ministry is telling motorists that they need to renew their expired driving licences, roadtax and insurance as quickly as possible. JPJ records show that over 2 million vehicles registered in Malaysian have expired roadtaxes so there is going to be ‘congestion’ as owners apply for renewals.

To help address this as well as an alarming number of uninsured vehicles on the road, Zurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad  is collaborating with Finology Sdn Bhd and their affiliate partner PayLink Global (M) Sdn Bhd (Payquik) to provide roadtax renewal services and motor insurance purchase via Payquik’s network of kiosks which are the first of its kind in Malaysia.

Through this strategic collaboration, motorists will be able to review their roadtax or purchase motor insurance coverage easily for cars and motorcycles. There are approximately 250 Payquik kiosks available nationwide, located primarily in the offices of utility companies, shopping malls and government buildings so Malaysians can access them while running errands such as paying bills or grocery shopping.

Modern lifestyles have fueled the growing demand for convenience and ease of purchasing goods and services. As economic activities resume, we understand the importance of roadtax renewal, as well as motor insurance so Malaysians can commute to work with peace of mind as the renewal exemption period ends. This three-way collaboration with Finology and Payquik will provide wider access for drivers as well as riders to obtain the service and protection they need in a fast and easy manner.”

According to the 2018 statistics from JPJ, there are about 29 million registered vehicles in Malaysia. Out of this, only 19 million vehicles have their roadtax renewed every year and about 95% of those with expired roadtax are motorcycles.

”One might ask why a service kiosk is necessary if people have the option of paying online now. The reality is that there are still customers who prefer to pay with cash or who do not own a credit card. This means that these people do not have sufficient access to the necessary financial services online,” explained Jared Lim, MD of Finology. “Enabling motor insurance purchasing and road tax renewal through kiosks is a great alternative to paying online or over the counter. Plus, these kiosks are available 24 hours, allowing customers to make purchase or renewal at their convenience.”

The latest collaboration is a joint effort to promote financial inclusion and offer Malaysians comprehensive coverage while on the road. In 2019, Zurich and Finology collaborated to offer customers end-to-end online insurance quotation and purchase services via Finology’s platform.

There’s also protection against legal liability to third party’s injury, death and property loss of damage for everyone travelling in the car, with automatic coverage for all authorised drivers without additional cost.

Should the car not be available after an accident as the workshop is repairing it, Family Drive will provide an Inconvenience Allowance of RM600 per accident. There is also AIA Roadside Assist with an array of value-added services such as battery and tyre replacement, vehicle towing, 24/7. Customers can request for assistance with their police report and will be provided with e-hailing vouchers to help them and their family get home safely after the accident.

If covered under Family Drive, the owner can get an Inconvenience Allowance of RM600 to cover the period while the vehicle is being repaired after an accident and is not available for use.

5% discount plus Excess Waiver
Family Drive has a discount of 5% if two or more cars in the same household are insured but only up to a maximum of 4 vehicles. The Excess waiver is granted if customers repair their car at an AIA panel workshop, with the total repair cost borne by AIA.

To enhance coverage, there are optional add-on benefits such as the Agreed Value feature whereby policyholders can protect themselves against the depreciation value of their car by setting an agreed coverage amount when purchasing the policy. The Waiver of Betterment Cost feature ensures that customers are covered for the full cost of new original parts for their car with no extra procedure or paperwork upon claims.

Additionally, customers can choose the Natural Disaster (Special Perils) options that protects their cars against loss or damage caused by flood, storm, landslide or other acts of nature. These days, you never know when your car might be caught in a flood…

In Malaysia, as in most countries, it is a legal requirement to have a vehicle registered and roadtax paid annually plus there must be insurance coverage, in order to drive on public roads. Some insurance companies impose what is known as a ‘betterment charges’. This means that if a 10-year old car has new headlights installed because the old ones were completely destroyed, the ‘age’ of the car in that area differs. For this, the insurance company will impose the betterment charge which sometimes catches owners by surprise.

You must have insurance coverage for your motor vehicle if you want to use it on the road. In the past, insurance coverage was just that; you paid the premium annually and if you had a claim for accident damage or the vehicle was stolen, the insurance company paid the appropriate compensation.

Today, things are different and to enhance the ownership experience, the car companies work with their partner panel insurers to give customers more than just insurance coverage. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) is among the companies which offers insurance coverage with extra benefits.
