electric exhaust gas turbochargerThe trend of downsizing engines which has been going on for the past 20 years has been apparent in all segments and even sportscars now see engines with smaller displacements, but still able to generate high outputs to maintain high performance. New technologies have helped in this respect, and for companies like Mercedes-AMG, technologies developed for Formula 1 cars are being adapted for road cars.

This is the case with the SL 43, a new entry-level version of the roadster range. In the 70 years of its development history, the SL has evolved from a thoroughbred racing car to an open-top luxury sportscar – and it has typically had large and powerful engines. For this new model, there is a 2-litre 4-cylinder engine which may depart from the norm of V8s but is not new to the SL either. In the 1950s and 1960s, there were also SL models with 1.9-litre engines with 4 cylinders too.

The 2-litre engine in the new SL 43 is a M139 unit and lays claim to being the first in the world with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger for a production model. This technology comes from Formula 1, having been used in the multiple championship-winning racing cars of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team for many years.

Electric exhaust gas turbocharger
The electric exhaust gas turbocharger employs an electric motor around 4 cm thin integrated directly on the turbocharger shaft between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the intake side. Electronically controlled, this drives the shaft of the turbocharger directly and thus accelerates the compressor wheel before the exhaust gas stream starts to drive it conventionally. It works at speeds of up to 170,000 rpm, which enables a very high airflow rate.

The advantage of having this little motor is significantly improved and immediate response from idle and across the entire engine speed range. The combustion engine (similar to the ones used in models like the C-Class) responds even more spontaneously to accelerator pedal input, while the electrification of the turbocharger enables higher torque at low revs. Even when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator or applies the brakes, the technology of the electric turbocharger is able to maintain the boost pressure at all times enhancing response.

The motor, powered via the 48V on-board electrical system, along with the turbocharger and power electronics are connected to the engine’s cooling circuit to ensure an optimal temperature environment at all times. Maximum output is 381 bhp at 6,750 rpm, with 480 Nm of torque available between 3,250 rpm and 5,000 rpm. Depending on the situation, the system can also provide a  boost of 14 bhp briefly from the belt-driven starter generator (RSG). The second-generation RSG, in addition to the temporary power boost. enables functions such as gliding mode and energy recovery for greater efficiency.

The electric exhaust gas turbocharger technology comes from the Formula 1 racing cars of the Mercedes-AMG F1 team.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission
Drive to the rear wheels is through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission (MCT = Multi-Clutch Transmission) which is used for the first time. A wet start-off clutch replaces the torque converter, its advantage being reduced weight and, thanks to its lower inertia, optimised response to accelerator pedal input, especially during spurts and load changes. There is also the RACE START function for quicker departures from standstill.

Performance claims show that this entry-level version is no less worthy of the SL badge, wit its ability to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 275 km/h. Fuel consumption, depending on the driver’s behaviour, can be up to 11.2 kms/litre, it is claimed.

Aluminium composite structure
The latest R232 series SL has a completely new architecture developed by Mercedes‑AMG. The new dimensional concept allows a 2+2 seating configuration for the first time since 1989. Constructed from lightweight aluminium composite, the chassis consists of an aluminium space frame with a self-supporting structure for maximum rigidity. The bodyshell architecture focusses on lateral and longitudinal dynamics while offering comfort and ensuring safety.

In the new SL, the intelligent material mix enables the highest possible rigidity at a low weight. The materials used include aluminium, magnesium, fibre composites and steel, from which the windscreen frame is made, for example. This serves as roll-over protection in conjunction with the roll-bar system behind the rear seats which pops up at lightning speed when needed.

Entry-level model features
While the overall form and SL proportions are similar, the exterior of the SL 43 has some details which differ from the two 8-cylinder models. For example, it has differentiated front and rear aprons as well as round instead of angular double tailpipe trim. 19-inch light-alloy wheels as standard but customers can also opt for aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels with diameters of 20 or 21 inches. The 20-inch wheels come with plastic aero rings that save additional weight.

Active aerodynamics
A technical highlight for improving aerodynamics is the AIRPANEL active air control system. The horizontal louvres behind the upper air intake are electronically controlled and can be opened and closed with actuator motors. In this way, the airflow is directed according to demand, thus improving aerodynamic performance.

Normally the louvres are closed to reduce air resistance. Should certain operating temperature levels be exceeded, the louvres will open and allow cooling air to flow to the heat exchangers. This calls for highly intelligent and fast control. When the temperature drops below the defined level, the louvres will automatically close again.

The same applies to another active aerodynamic component – the retractable rear spoiler integrated into the car’s profile. It changes its position depending on driving conditions. Numerous parameters are considered to determine the position – driving speed, the longitudinal and lateral acceleration and steering speed are among the factors. The spoiler can assume 5 different angles when speeds are more than 80 km/h to either optimise handling stability or reduce drag.

Lightweight fabric soft top
The latest SL uses a soft top instead of the previous metal vario-roof, removing 21 kgs of weight. The Z-fold saves space and weight, and makes it possible to dispense with a conventional soft-top compartment cover. For convenience, an electric motor opens and closes (at speeds up to 60 km/h) the soft top within 15 seconds. Switching to a soft top also lowers the centre of gravity, benefitting driving dynamics and handling.

‘Hyperanalogue’ cockpit
The interior of the SL 43 has a combination of analogue geometry and the digital world which the designers refer to as ‘hyperanalogue’. This is exemplified by the fully digital instrument cluster which is integrated into a three-dimensional visor. The symmetrical instrument panel is designed as a powerful wing and structured into an upper and lower section. The highlight on the dashboard are the 4 galvanised turbine nozzles which surfaces merge into the instrument panel in the form of powerful power domes. Despite symmetry, the cockpit design creates a clear focus on the driver.

Mercedes-AMG, a part of the Mercedes-Benz Group, is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. The company’s products have been associated with high performance, exclusivity and superlative driving dynamics and these would generally be passenger cars. However, to start off its anniversary, the company has created a special edition that is not a passenger car but a SUV. Perhaps it reflects the fact that the SUV segment is the hottest today.

The special edition is the G 63 ‘Edition 55’ which has received specific equipment and features for exclusivity. The G‑Class has enjoyed a unique position in the AMG portfolio for over 2 decades and is its ‘king of off-road performance’.

Introduced in 1999
The first production model of an AMG variant of the G‑Class was introduced in 1999 to mark the 20th anniversary of the off-road legend. The G 55 AMG marked the beginning of a new, highly successful chapter in G‑Class history. In 2002, the G 63 AMG set new standards. It was the first time a 12-cylinder engine had been used in the G‑Class. This was followed in 2004 by the G 55 AMG with a V8 supercharged engine, and in 2012 with the G 65 AMG that has a 1,000 Nm V12 engine. The current Mercedes‑AMG G 63 continues the success story.

The Edition 55 is available in obsidian black metallic or G manufaktur opalite white bright paint. The colours on both sides of the vehicle are coordinated with the AMG emblem and the suggested AMG rhombus. Distinctive contrasts are provided by the 22‑inch AMG forged wheels in a cross-spoke design with a matt tantalum grey paint finish and a high-sheen rim flange, as well as the AMG Night Package and the AMG Night package II. The fuel filler cap in silver chrome with AMG lettering also bears witness to great attention to detail.

The AMG story
AMG was founded by two men – Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher – in 1967. Both men were engine tuners and car customisers, and they turned Mercedes-Benz models into high-performance machines. Their fame took a big leap when they developed a Mercedes-Benz 300SEL for racing. With its 6.8-litre engine, it created history when it finished second at the 1071 24 Hours of Spa, beating much lighter rivals.

Their specialisation in Mercedes-Benz cars brought them closer to the carmaker and in time, their work was recognised as being of such high quality that Mercedes-Benz allowed its dealerships to sell AMG models, the first being the 225 bhp 190 E AMG in the late 1980s.

The race-winning 300SEL developed by AMG (nicknamed ‘Red Pig’) which made the company more famous.

Just a few years into the decade of the 1990s, Daimler-Benz brought AMG into its group with a controlling stake. This saw the birth of the Mercedes-AMG brand as a high-performance sub-brand while AMG became the unit that looked after everything to do with high-performance products, including motorsports. Eventually, most models would have AMG Line versions which had additional sporty equipment designed by the subsidiary

From a two-man start-up in 1967 to a state-of-the-art development site including its own engine manufacturing facility today, Mercedes-AMG continues to build on its position as a highly successful performance and sportscar brand through numerous successes in motorsport and the development of unique road cars.

The current Mercedes‑AMG portfolio comprises more than 50 models with a power range from 306 ps to 843 ps, and includes its first performance hybrid –  GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. Apart from models derived from the Mercedes-Benz range, Mercedes-AMG has also independently developed sportscars such as the GT 4‑Door model and the new SL.

Moving into the era of electrification, Mercedes‑AMG will offer E PERFORMANCE – performance hybrids with an independent drive layout and technology from Formula 1. The portfolio includes all-electric AMG derivatives based on the Mercedes-Benz Group’s own EVA2 platform. In the near future, completely independent battery-electric AMG models will also follow, which will be based on the new electrical architecture (AMG.EA) which has been developed completely in-house.

As in 2021, the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship will have Official F1 Safety and Medical Cars from two brands – Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin. The cars will be used during different rounds and for the first round on March 18, it will be the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series for the Safety Car and GT 63 S 4MATIC+ Medical Car. It will be the first time that the estate model (previously the C 63 S AMG Estate) is not used since Mercedes-AMG began supplying F1 Official Cars in 1996.

Extensive equipment for F1 job
From a technical standpoint, both cars are almost entirely standard. However, they have extensive equipment specific to their respective jobs on the track. The most noticeable feature of the Official F1 Safety Car is the absence of the usual light bar on the roof, which would have interfered with the carefully refined aerodynamic balance of the AMG GT Black Series.

Instead, development engineers at Mercedes-AMG came up with something completely new. At the front, the obligatory signalling has been incorporated into the upper area of the windscreen, while the rearward-facing lights have been elegantly integrated into the rear spoiler. All signalling functions are delivered via fast-reacting and energy-efficient LED lights.

At the front, three small orange light modules and one large green module are positioned on each side of the AMG logo, level with the sun visors. In the main upper blade of the rear spoiler are 13 orange lights – 3 on the outer edges on either side that shine steadily, and 7 more lights in the centre that flash when required. There are also 4 wider, green LED modules.

Two tiny video cameras are installed into the spoiler strut on the right-hand side and their images displayed inside the car. One camera serves as an electronic rearview mirror for the co-driver (small monitor in the headliner to the right of the conventional rearview mirror), while the other transmits a live TV stream. As a service for the spectators in the stands, there is also a light module in each of the rear side windows which displays ‘SC’ (for Safety Car) in orange when the car is in action.

The rear number plate is also illuminated in either orange or green in synch with the safety lights. Likewise, the headlights and rear lights have an important role to play in the signalling. Whenever the safety car is on the track, their rapid flashing draws even more attention.

AMG Track Package
The interior of the Safety Car is the same as that of the standard AMG GT Black Series with the optional Track Package including roll-over protection. The lightweight roll cage made from bolted tubular titanium consists of a main frame, a belt-fixture brace, two rear braces and a diagonal cross at the rear. The system increases the already excellent vehicle stiffness even further and thus has a positive influence on vehicle performance. It also improves passive safety.

The only new features are the 6-point safety harnesses stipulated by the FIA and two tablets in the centre console and instrument panel in front of the passenger seat. They enable the co-driver to monitor the situation on the track. Displayed on the left tablet in the centre console is the international TV signal, while the right monitor can be switched between the animated representation showing the current position of the racing cars on the track or the current lap times.

Same telemetry systems as F1 cars
Further additional FIA-specific systems are also installed and are identical to those in every F1 racing car. They include the transponder system for time-keeping, the high-resolution GPS and the telemetry. Likewise integrated is the ‘marshalling system’ which uses three coloured LEDs in the instrument binnacle and in front of the co-driver to show the flag signals for the respective section of the track. In addition to that, there is the ‘medical warning light’: in the event of an accident on the track that exceeds a critical g-force threshold, the LEDs flash several times. This provides the crew in the Safety Car with an additional warning to prepare for action.

Developed for demanding service
High cornering speeds, dynamic sprints and fast lap times – the FIA sets a demanding job profile for the Safety Car. The bottom line is that it must be able to lead the racing cars safely around the track in extreme situations (often in rain). The Safety Car cannot drive too slowly either as that could lead to the tyres and brakes of the racing cars cooling down too much and cause their engines to overheat. If necessary, the Safety Car can reach up to 325 km/h.

The AMG GT Black Series has all the necessary credentials for the tough job with its V8 biturbo dry-sump engine which produces 730 ps. No other road-legal AMG model is currently closer to motorsport than this. That includes the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission to the twin-pipe exhaust system made from thin-gauge stainless steel with a titanium silencer.

The suspension specialists have engineered a set-up in combination with the Pirelli P Zero tyres that offers the best possible solution for all racetracks and weather conditions. The standard-fit AMG ceramic high-performance composite brakes are exactly the same as those in the regular AMG GT Black Series. The same applies to the finely tuned aerodynamics with a large front skirt, additional flaps, a bigger front splitter and the vertical tear-off edge on the rear skirt. Together with the two‑blade rear wing with an additional, electronically controlled flap, the aerodynamics provide the AMG GT Black Series with optimum downforce and balance.

The new Official F1 Medical Car
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ makes its Formula 1 debut as the second official car – taking over from its predecessor, the C 63 S AMG Estate. With an equally important role, it is on standby for rapid emergency response and is crewed by up to 3 medics, including the FIA’s Medical Rescue Coordinator, Dr. Ian Roberts. Occupying the back seats are either one or two local medics who come from a specialist clinic close to the racetrack.

The medical car follows the racing cars as they take off at the start and around the track during the first lap. This is because the cars are particularly densely packed in this critical phase of the race. In the event of an incident, this ensures the doctors can reach the accident site as quickly as possible and immediately start administering first aid. During the race, the Medical Car will be on standby in the pitlane alongside the Safety Car.

To make sure no time is lost in the event of an emergency, the new Medical Car has maximum performance capabilities. Its 4-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 639 ps and can accelerate the 4-door coupe from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, with a top speed up to 315 km/h. Unlike the C 63 S which had only rear-wheel drive, the new Medical Car has fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive which guarantees optimum traction, especially in wet and slippery conditions.

In terms of appearance, the medical car differs from the standard production car largely due to the distinctive FIA and F1 logos and the light bar on the roof. It is mounted on a carbonfibre scoop designed to offer the lowest possible wind resistance. At the same time, it optimizes the airflow towards the fixed rear wing.

Inside the spacious boot is the full set of emergency equipment, including defibrillator, breathing apparatus, rescue cutter and two handheld fire extinguishers. When the rear lid is open, additional flashing lights signal a warning to the racing cars if they are still circulating on the track behind the Safety Car.

All F1 racing drivers wear special gloves equipped with sensors in the pinkie finger to monitor their vital signs. In an emergency, the paramedics in the Medical Car can receive information in real-time on one of the screens telling them the current pulse rate or blood-oxygen level of the casualty. This enables them to coordinate effective and targeted first-response measures.

Aston Martin provides F1 Safety and Medical Cars again for 12 races in 2022

When it opened for business in 1895, Cycle & Carriage was a general store offering all kinds of products, from  soap to writing paper to screwdrivers and simple machine parts. Vaccination does not make you immune to COVID-19 infection. You can still get infected and although you may not show symptoms, you could spread the coronavirus to others. Do not stop taking protective measures such as wearing a facemask, washing hands frequently and social distancing.

There was a time when hot hatches were the ultimate in driving experience. They offered the purest driving experience despite being small in size and power.

Then came the mid-2000s and the power craze that ensued. That’s when all car makers seemed to hurry to lay down as much power as they could as quickly as possible.

This meant doing away with some of the basics that made a hot hatch such as light weight, only the barest of necessities, and as little in the form of driving aids as possible.

That was when the likes of the Ford Focus RS, the Megane RS and Clio RS as well as the Civic Type R reigned supreme. This was in Malaysia of course. Europeans had other contenders, but let’s keep it local. On that note – we also had the Satria GTI (not really mid-2000s) and the Satria R3.

Now though we have the Mercedes-Benz A45S AMG, a hot hatch that is powered by the most powerful four-cylinder ever made.

This AMG is so intelligent that it is able to send power to individual wheels when needed rather than between the front and back axle, like the cheaper but less intelligent A35 AMG. It’s also interesting to note that the engine of the A45S is still made by a single person who then signs off on the engine (shown below), but the A35 though is powered by an engine that was put together on a conventional assembly line.

The A45S AMG offers 421hp and 500Nm of torque.

It does the 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds.

These were numbers that Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini once offered. Today, these numbers are available in an A-Class.

Let that sink in.

But that aside, the A45S is such an animal to drive, that it almost make you doubt your driving skills.

It makes you think that you don’t have the skills to fully exploit its potential.

At one moment it is just chugging along, and with just a tap of the accelerator it threatens to tear your face off with unbelievable acceleration.

You truly have to feel it at least once in your life. Forget paying for a roller-coaster ride, pay an owner of an A45S AMG to let you feel its launch control.

Let’s start with the design

A standard A-Class on steroids is the easiest way to sum it up. You will probably see a lot of pretenders on the road, those that have spent their fair share of time in a local body shop in Sunway or someplace.

The front aero works are functional though and work to cool the brakes and channel air to the radiator mounted at the bottom of the front bumper.

The design is basically acceptable, except for those fake exhausts that are basically regular exhaust housings for a regular set of exhausts. The kind that you could find on a Proton Iswara.

What about the interior?

A fantastic place to be in and that is putting it lightly. Let’s start with the seats because that’s where you will be spending all your time on whenever you are driving this car.

Fantastic, adjustable and intelligent – that’s how I would describe it.

Not only are the seats in the A45S AMG full sports seats with adjustable side bolstering. But the seats also feature a technology called Mercedes-Benz Seat Kinetics.

This tech is aimed to improve comfort and to safeguard your back and discs. When selected, this mode constantly and minutely adjust the seat settings by a few degrees or millimetres, and it is all aimed at improving comfort over long hours.

Besides that, there is the massive twin-screen Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) display, with each monitor measuring in at 12.3-inches, which results in a massive 24.6-inch screen just ahead of you.

As you would expect, the MBUX is basically the avatar through which you access all the digital goodies the A45S has to offer. Digital goodies like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, all the settings of the car, and even the different driving modes.

I like the driving modes because it turns the beast into a little charmer when the going is steady. And you select the different driving modes via a switch at the centre console, or a dial located on the steering wheel. Which curiously looks like it was inspired by Porsche’s boost button that is similarly located at the same place as the Mercedes. Talking about drive modes, this takes me to my next point.

How does it drive?

As you would expect of an AMG – but more! Because of the aforementioned driving modes, the car really does have a near Jackyl & Hyde character at the touch of a button.

Select Race mode and it turns into a fire breathing dragon that will have your passengers unashamedly offering their recently consumed lunch to the floor mats.

This is of course the point at which the car is at its finest. The most AMG you can get in a hot hatch.

In this mode, the acceleration is so fierce that I sometimes forget to breathe. This mode is also way past my skill level so I only dabbled with it a couple of times, for giggles.

In Sport mode though, the car simply offered a glimpse of what it was capable of doing. I am not sure why anyone would select this mode when you can simply go full power in Race mode. Perhaps this is to scare passengers without scaring yourself.

Comfort is the mode I spent most of my time in because I reckon the people who buy this car will be spending a lot of their time commuting in this mode except for that occasional blast up to their favourite roads.

Unless you have a car for different purposes.

Simply put – the A45S AMG has a mode for every mood you are in. And if you don’t know what mood you are in, there is individual mode that lets you select how you want certain elements of the car to feel like. Such as the suspension, the accelerator and the heft of the steering wheel.

But it can also be very tiring to live with. Simply because you are always aware of what is under your right foot, you tend to take short cuts.

Such as when you are cruising along in traffic and see an opening that would get you to your destination quicker. Usually you would not think of such a manoeuvre because it wouldn’t be very nice to cut anyone off.

But with 421hp under your right foot in such a small car, it is as simple as nudging the throttle, and listening to the turbos spool in about a quarter of a second and before you know it you are already in that small opening in traffic. All this without disrupting the pace of traffic, save for that small annoyance to the driver you just cut off.

Should you buy it?

Of course you should! This car will go down in history books as a legend. It is up there with the hot hatch greats such as the Renault 5 Turbo. It is a car that history will remember and will forever speak about as that car that once had the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the world.

It doesn’t only have the most powerful engine, but it is also incredibly fun to drive.

As tiring as it can be, I looked forward to getting into the seat every chance I got.

The interior too can be a charming place to be in. With a Burmester sound system offering a orchestra-ish experience and enough USB plugs to light up an LED christmas tree, it has almost everything you could want.

Buy it if you can. Get someone else to buy it if you can’t afford it. Create opportunities to drive it every chance you get. Because cars like this don’t come often. We motor heads are lucky to be alive during the era of the A45S AMG. Enjoy it any chance you get.

As for the price, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia wants RM437,673.41 for the A45S AMG. Which is a lot of coin for an A-Class. But don’t think of it as an A-Class, because it will never make sense to fork out that much for such a small car. Instead, think of it as a fire-breathing baby-AMG – perhaps then it would make sense.

With the accelerating move towards electrification by the auto industry, it’s inevitable that high-performance brands will also follow the same trend. While purists will say that electric motors cannot replace powerful internal combustion engines where sheer performance and driving experience are concerned, the companies that are making such cars are going to prove otherwise.

High-performance hybrid
Mercedes-AMG is one of them and its new GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE is a high-performance hybrid that draws on technologies from Formula 1. As a preview of its electrified future, the E PERFORMANCE model uses a combination of 4-litre V8 biturbo combustion petrol engine and a 105 kW electric motor to generate a system output of 843 ps and maximum system torque of more than 1,400 Nm.

This is the most powerful series production model from Mercedes-AMG to date with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h claimed to take 2.9 seconds, and 0 to 200 km/h can be reached in less than 10 seconds. From there, acceleration continues strongly right up to 316 km/h.

The high-performance 400V battery pack has been developed in-house and, along with the electric motor, is installed on the rear axle. This not only enhances response which is immediate with rapid torque build-up but also improves weight distribution. As with all hybrid vehicles, it is also possible to run on just electricity for a limited range; in the case of the E PERFORMANCE, it is claimed to be 12 kms which would be useful when looking for a parking space or slowly cruising around residential areas with almost no noise.

Electric motor influences vehicle dynamics
The control of vehicle dynamics also benefits from the hybrid drive. Instead of braking intervention by ESP, the electric motor can also control traction as soon as a wheel signals too much slip. To do this, the intelligent control system reduces the drive torque of the electric motor that is transferred to the wheel via the limited-slip rear differential. The result is that ESP does not have to intervene at all, or only later.

This provides a useful advantage in that the combustion engine can be operated with higher torque, which both improves agility afterwards and increases efficiency. In addition, the power otherwise ‘destroyed’ during braking can be used to charge the battery in a regenerative process.

Because the battery pack is always maintained always within the optimum temperature window of around 45 degrees, thanks to direct cooling, regeneration can also be optimised. Regeneration starts when a driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, ie in overrun mode without touching the brake pedal. This charges the battery and creates a strong braking torque; the wheel brakes are subjected to less wear or, depending on the regeneration level and traffic situation, do not have to be applied at all.

4-door GT coupe styling
The hybrid model has a similar appearance at the 4-door coupe with the characteristic front apron which is based on the design of the 2-door AMG GT. The outer air intakes are wider and more pointed towards the centre of the car, and the airflow is channelled to the wheel arch coolers by three vertical fins.

Exclusive identification features at the rear are the rear apron with integrated plug-in charging flap and the model designation highlighted in red. With the hybrid, AMG is also introducing externally fluted trapezoidal twin exhaust tailpipes. Customers can personalise their car with the new AMG Night Package II or a combination of the Night Package and Carbon Package.

Flagship of the model series
As the new flagship of the model series, the E PERFORMANCE will be extensively equipped. It has all the upgrades of the latest model facelift, including the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with a new damping system. Also standard are the adapted AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the latest MBUX multimedia system.

The standard Widescreen Cockpit features the latest MBUX multimedia system with AMG hybrid-specific displays and functions. In the instrument cluster, the driver can read the electric range, the power consumption, the output and torque of the electric motor and the temperatures of the battery and electric motor. High-quality graphics on the multimedia display visualise the power flow of the entire drive system, rpm, output, torque and temperature of the electric motor, as well as the temperature of the battery. The rear-seat passengers can also view information on the energy flow as well as the power and torque of the electric motor on their optional multimedia display.

The standard AMG Performance steering wheel with its distinctive twin-spoke design and integrated control buttons is fitted. The three rounded twin spokes combine strength with lightness, while the buttons have brilliant displays and an efficient turn-and-press operating logic. This allows important driving functions and all driving modes to be controlled without having to take one’s hands off the steering wheel. As a new feature, it is possible to select the regeneration levels of the hybrid drive via the steering wheel buttons.

AMG sound
When driving on all-electric power, the legally required Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System warns the surroundings that the car is approaching. A specially composed low-frequency, speed-dependent AMG sound is emitted to the outside via single loudspeakers at the front and rear. The sound can also be heard at a subdued level in the interior, as acoustic feedback for the passengers.

At higher speeds, the customer can select the sound experience between ‘balanced’ and ‘powerful’ using the sound buttons in the centre console or on the steering wheel. When the combustion engine starts, the selected setting influences the sound of the exhaust system. In every situation, one thing remains the same: under all conditions, the E PERFORMANCE will be immediately recognisable as an AMG by its sound.

The unique Forza Horizon Edition possible has an exclusive body livery that emphasises its unique character and makes it clear that this car will not be available for purchase in the real world. The TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa this weekend is special for Mercedes-AMG. It was 50 years ago that the classic endurance race in Belgium saw the still young AMG brand scoring its first major success. Hans Heyer and Clemens Schickentanz won their class and finished second overall with the AMG 300 SEL 6.8, a victory that brought AMG to the attention of the motorsports world. It was not a works racing car entered by Mercedes-Benz but a car developed by the engineering firm which was founded in 1967, hence the car’s entry as an ‘AMG’.

The ‘Red Pig’
The big W109 Mercedes-Benz sedan, painted in red and nicknamed ‘Red Pig’, weighed 1,635 kgs. AMG engineers got its 6835 cc engine to generate up to 428 ps and 620 Nm, giving a 0 to 100 km/h capability of 6.1 seconds and a top speed of more than 265 km/h. It suited the old course of Spa-Francorchamps – 14.863 kms long, with many straights that could be driven at full throttle.

3 ready-to-race cars
As homage to the legendary red car, Mercedes-AMG (the company became part of the Daimler Group in 2005) has developed a trio of cars in limited edition with the theme of ‘50 Years Legend of Spa’. For maximum exclusivity, the number has been limited to one of each. Next to the iconic red livery, the three unique pieces incorporate further exclusive characteristics and specifications. The limited edition consists of one SLS AMG GT3, one GT3 (2016 model year) and the current evolution version of the GT3.

All three racing cars are ready-to-race. Their livery recalls the iconic looks of the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG from 50 years ago. Next to the red basic colour, the surfaces for starting numbers and sponsors have been inspired by the race participation at Spa at the time.

The extras in the interior include a finish in Graphite Metallic Matt and a dashboard fascia in carbonfibre. On the dashboard, there is an anniversary plaque with the original signature of AMG founder Hans Werner Aufrecht.

Without FIA homologation
Technically, the special editions have a bit of differentiation too. The AMG 6.3 litre V8 engine, with a performance exhaust system, can develop its full power level without an air restrictor but as supplied ex-factory, it does not have FIA homologation.

The SLS AMG GT3 ‘50 Years Legend of Spa’ is a brand-new competition gullwing car classified as a 2021 model. Officially, production of this model ended in 2015 but for the anniversary edition, Mercedes-AMG took the final and only available bodyshell of the model from its warehouse to build the special version. Together with the other characteristics and specifications of the special version, the result is a car that can’t be exceeded in terms of uniqueness.

The 2016 anniversary car has been a fascinating model from the first model generation. Next to the typical special colour schemes for the interior and the exterior as well as the numerous special features, the race car has another feature that makes it special: its chassis number. The spaceframe, made from aluminium, has the number 100.

The 2020 car, in special edition form, is the latest GT3. Apart from the exhaust system that enhances performance, its technology is identical to that of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars that have been racing around the track in this year’s 24-hour race.

Final testing of the eighth generation of the SL model line of Mercedes-Benz is now being carried out and the new roadster, to be marketed under the Mercedes-AMG brand will be launched later this year. While full details of the new car are not being revealed, pre-production units must be on the assembly line and Mercedes-AMG can’t wait to show off the new interior.

The first 300 SL Roadster, launched 69 years ago, had a minimalist and high-quality interior and the designers of its 21st century descendant have drawn inspiration from it. The interior design of the upcoming SL transforms the iconic tradition of the first Roadster into the modern era with a mix of analogue geometry and digital world – called ‘hyperanalogue’.

The cockpit design, right down to the adjustable central display in the centre console, is focused on the driver, as every genuine sportscar is. Its dimensional concept with 2+2 seats offers more function and space in the interior at the same time.

“The interior of the new Mercedes-AMG SL pampers driver and passengers with sophisticated luxury. The new SL combines the highest levels of comfort and quality in its interior, coupled with just the right amount of sportiness. The high-quality combination of analogue world and state-of-the-art digital equipment makes one thing clear: the new SL is the rebirth of an icon for the modern era,” said Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Describing the new car as ‘the most iconic SL ever’, Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of the Daimler Group, said it was a great opportunity and challenge for design because every designer wants to create icons.

The new and sophisticated dimensional concept once again allows a 2+2 seating configuration for the first time since the R129 SL generation of 1989. The added versatility allows for either additional persons on board, or the second row of seats can be used as additional storage space to accommodate luggage.

Aviation-inspired instrument panel
The symmetrical instrument panel is designed as a sculptural, powerful wing and structured into an upper and lower section. There are four galvanised turbine nozzles which merge into the instrument panel in the form of powerful power domes (with the frontal view resembling the face ‘Jar Jar Binks’, the character in ‘Star Wars’, observed one of our readers). The lower section of the instrument panel evolves fluidly from the centre console, seamlessly connecting the two elements.

Despite symmetry, the cockpit design creates a clear focus on the driver. The instrument panel’s high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen is not designed to be free-standing but is integrated into a high-tech visor. This prevents reflections caused by sunlight, a problem in some cars which can be irritating to the driver.

Adjustable touchscreen
The centre console dominates the space between the driver and front passenger. Rising sharply towards the front, it flows into the lower section of the instrument panel. The functional and visual centre of the centre console is the metallic panel that breaks through the leather surfaces at the front and rear.

Featuring the NACA air intake signature, it carries on the genes of the AMG GT and GT 4-Door Coupe. This design element thus becomes a hallmark AMG stylistic element in the interior. The NACA air intake transitions almost seamlessly into the tablet-like 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen in portrait format. To avoid reflections caused by sunlight when driving with the top down, this screen can be adjusted electrically into a more vertical position, when necessary. Its portrait format offers clear advantages, especially for navigation, as well as more space ergonomically.

Integrated door panel design
Similar to the centre console, the surfaces in the doors also radiate fluidly from the instrument panel. The result is a gradient accentuated with decorative topstitching that frames the entire interior and runs past the turbine nozzles at the sides. The centre of the door is designed as a sensual layered topography.

The pull handle is also designed in the same way as the centre console and is another eye-catching feature. The materiality and modelling of the surfaces are repeated in the doors, creating balance in the interior. High-quality Burmester loudspeakers in real metal, whose perforation pattern also stands out visually, are integrated into the doors.

Sculptural seat design
The avantgarde seat of the new SL has a sculptural design in a sporty way with layers and enveloping surfaces. This makes the seats appear lighter and less voluminous. The headrests are integrated into the backrest and contribute to the sporty proportions of the seat, completing the symbiosis of high-tech, performance and luxury.

Latest MBUX system
As with every Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG sold today, the car will have the intelligent system known as the Mercedes-Benz User Experience, or MBUX. It is a second-generation system and some functional content and the operating structure correspond to those of the S-Class. They have been extensively supplemented or replaced by AMG-specific content and views. This makes the new SL highly independent in terms of communication and information.

The interior has become even more digital and intelligent, as hardware and software have been extensively enhanced. Brilliant images on the LCD screens make it easy to control vehicle and comfort functions. The appearance of the instrument cluster can be personalised with different display styles and individually selectable main views. Customers can also order the car with a head-up display as well.

Final real-world testing of next-generation Mercedes-AMG SL now underway

With the Lotus Elise, Exige and Evora ending production this year, a single model takes over their places – the new Emira. Apart from being an truly all-new model in over a decade, the Emira also marks the end of an era – that of Lotus sportscars with internal combustion engines. The British carmaker has confirmed that moving forward, the next models appearing later in the decade will be powered only by electricity.

The Emira (which means in ‘commander’ or ‘leader’ in some languages) is the first all-new Lotus sportscar to be developed under Vision80, the company’s strategic plan guiding the transformation of Lotus as it moves towards its 80th anniversary in 2028. Acting as a catalyst to further enhance brand awareness globally, it’s spearheading the repositioning and expansion of the Lotus retail network ahead of the arrival of a family of new vehicles.

New design language
Bridging the transition from one era to a new one, the Emira has new design language, some of which has already been seen on the Evija hypercar. Sculpted surfaces and technical detailing, delivering exotic supercar appeal in the sportscar segment, are complemented by a new and more premium approach for Lotus in terms of forms and materials with higher build quality than ever before.

The influence of the Evija is evident in the fluid surfaces and crisp feature lines. The lineage is even more obvious on the prominent leading edge of the bonnet, with unique-in-class exit vents to guide airflow over the car and optimise aerodynamics. The bonnet houses the current version of the iconic Lotus roundel, its first appearance on a new Lotus sportscar and slightly larger than on previous models.

Active aerodynamics unnecessary with clever engineering
Aerodynamics have always been at the heart of the Lotus since the company was founded in 1948, with Colin Chapman coming up with many innovations. And the approaches taken are kept simple – no active aerodynamics as clever engineering means they’re not needed.

The Emira is the only model in its class to create passive downforce that’s precisely balanced between the front and rear axles at all speeds, perfectly tuned to the weight distribution and suspension geometry of the car. It means as downforce increases with speed, generating exceptional grip through corners, the handling characteristics remain constant, precise and predictable.

Lotus Sports Car Architecture
The Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis, technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains part of the company’s sportscar DNA. Known as Lotus Sports Car Architecture, it debuted with the Elise. However, for the Emira, every dimension is different to any previous Lotus chassis and it is fabricated in an all-new facility as well.

The car, which has a target weight of 1,405 kgs, has two defined chassis and suspension settings. Tour is tuned for everyday road use, delivering the optimum blend of Lotus dynamic performance and handling with a more comfortable ride. Sports is available with the optional Lotus Drivers Pack and provides a slightly stiffer suspension set-up for enhanced dynamic capability and feel. Hydraulic steering provides excellent feedback for the driver.

Two engine options
Customers will have a choice of two engines, with the familiar Toyota-source, Lotus-engineered supercharged 3.5-litre V6 being available initially. This will produce 360 – 400 bhp and 430 Nm, with a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time claimed to be less than 4.5 seconds with a top speed of up to 290 km/h.

The second option will be a Mercedes-AMG 2-litre turbocharged unit, the M139. This is currently the world’s most powerful production 4-cylinder unit. Depending on the state of tune done by Lotus engineers,  the German engine could provide up to 416 bhp and will come with AMG’s 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Interior design – a huge leap ahead
Within the 4412 mm long and 1895 mm wide body, the cabin follows traditional Lotus principles of putting the driver at the very centre of the experience. The cockpit environment, with minimum distractions, has essential controls easily reached and efficient ergonomics.

There’s a huge leap forward in all aspects of the cabin, from the contemporary design and quality of materials to the increase in storage space, fit and finish, attention to detail and abundant advanced technology now integrated. The modern technical finishes create a premium experience for the driver – ‘technology with soul’ – and some details added pay tribute to the heritage and sporting success of Lotus.

Examples include the positioning of the gearstick on manual cars, which echoes that of the iconic Esprit, and the semi-exposed gear linkage visible at the base of the centre console on V6 manual cars, as on the Elise and Exige. Adding to the sense of theatre is the protective red cover over the start/stop button.

The early Lotus cars had the bare minimum of equipment in the cabin. It was the trade-off for the exhilarating drive that could be experienced. However, this singlemindedness gradually changed over the decades and comfort and convenience features found their way into the cabin. In the Emira, the two seats have 4-way electric adjustment, with the option to upgrade to a premium sports seat with 12-way electric adjustment.

Besides the flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, features available include keyless go, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, electric folding door mirrors, parking sensors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, curtain airbags, launch control, and even a stolen vehicle tracker.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are also provided, such as adaptive cruise control, anti-collision system, fatigue alert, road sign information, vehicle speed limiter, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, and lane change assist. Purists may be unhappy about this ‘overload’ of technology but these systems are generally non-intrusive, activating only when needed to prevent an accident.

The first public display of the Emira will be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England which starts tomorrow. Orders are now being taken worldwide for the car which has a starting price of 72,000 euros (about RM354,000). The first customers will get their cars from March next year.

Here’s what Jenson Button, former F1 World Champion, says about the Emira: “You always expect a Lotus to have good mechanical grip through the low-speed corners but there was plenty of downforce in the high-speed corners too. That means the feeling of great balance is the same no matter how you’re driving it.  It’s exceptional and I’m a big fan. I’m still in shock at the price. Starting at under £60,000, it’s fantastic and means so many people are going to have the opportunity to experience it first-hand. It’s being called a ‘junior supercar’ but it would give a lot of supercars a run for their money… and it’s more comfortable than most of them!”
