Growing up in the olden days was the best thing that happened to us car enthusiasts. Why? Because we actually got to enjoy the good old days when cars were made with engines and as little electronics as possible.

This writer remembers the days when he used to sit with his grandpa and watch him work on his 1960s Volkswagen Beetle. What a beauty it was. Then we got to witness the bug on-screen known as ‘Herbie’. So, it’s safe to say that the rear-engine bug had its golden days.

Later on, Volkswagen introduced the ‘New Beetle’ which was a more modernised model but still kept the original Beetle design language. Unlike the previous models, this one had its engine in the front. Overall, it felt like a failed attempt in recreating what was already perfect.

Toyota has been making the C-HR, a subcompact crossover SUV, since 2016. Hiroyuki Koba, Toyota’s head engineer, started the project’s initial stages of development in 2013 as a model that will slot between the Corolla Cross and the Yaris Cross.

With cutting-edge design, technologies, and a variety of electrified hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains with increased power, and extended all-electric driving capabilities, the all-new, next-generation Toyota C-HR raises the bar for the exceptional quality and status of its predecessor.

Exterior

The eye-catching design of the new Toyota C-HR is consistent with the aesthetic shown by the prologue model unveiled in late 2022. It has the appearance of “a concept car on the road” thanks to its unusual bodywork.

With its coupe-like lines, the original Toyota C-HR broke the norm for SUV design. The new model’s “super-coupe” profile gives these a sharper rendering. The all-electric bZ4X is also seen with the same frontal treatment, which shows the new face of Toyota SUVs.

It’s bad enough that we are being spied on through our electronic devices, now our cars can do the same. Yes, with up to 25 gigabytes of data produced every hour, modern cars are already on par with smartphones in terms of data collecting.

Despite not exactly knowing where you are heading, your new car does know where you have been. Additionally, it may occasionally disclose all of your private information to shady third parties as well as automakers like Ford and Toyota.

The data consists primarily of information that makes sense, such as the full names, residences, phone numbers, emails, and licence numbers of the drivers. Every transaction now seems to come with a courteous request for your phone number or email address.

According to domestic commerce and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub, the government is looking for a place in the capital of Johor that would be appropriate for a non-subsidised petrol station.

He said that the domestic commerce and cost of living ministry is conducting a study because Johor borders Singapore and many vehicles from the republic fill up there.

Two (such) petrol stations were opened as part of a pilot initiative in Padang Besar and Wang Kelian, Perlis, which helped the government save over RM6 million on fuel subsidies.

The Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) mainly functions as a mechanism to evaluate the electricity rate every six months to account for changing fuel prices, which make up 65% of the cost component of the electricity tariff. This new ICPT surcharge for the second half of 2023 was based on fuel prices in the first half of 2023 because it is changed every six months depending on the six months prior to it.

The new ICPT programme for the second half of 2023 may require EV users to pay more to charge their cars at home. An RM0.10 per kWh tax will be applied to bills that use more than 1,500 kWh per month, which is an increase from the RM0.02 rebate that was previously given.
