Drifting a vehicle is a demonstration of supreme car control that impresses and fascinates. When done by professionals, it is like automotive ballet with the car (or cars) sliding around in precise movements. The skill these drivers possess can be seen when they can drift just centimetres away from a wall as their tyres smoke while fighting for grip.

The skill can be learnt though it takes time and lots of practice. Once a driver has gained sufficient skill and confidence, there are places where drifting can be enjoyed (but should not be done on public roads) and also events where drivers compete.

Even though the new generation of the Ford Ranger made its global debut at the end of 2021 (July 2022 in Malaysia), development work has not stopped to improve it. While the majority of new features and technologies have been introduced with it at launch, Ford still has a few more in the pipeline, it seems.

One of these is an innovative system which makes taking tight turns in off-road conditions much easier. Known as Trail Turn Assist, it will be available with certain Ranger variants, adding to the pick-up truck’s capabilities.

To fill the gap between the Wildtrak and the Raptor in terms of off-road capability and on-road comfort, Ford Australia has introduced the Wildtrak X variant for the Ranger.

In addition to a list of already existing standard equipment, the new trim, which is also available on the pickup from the previous generation, gets enhanced suspension, a wider track, and improved ground clearance.

Following on from the alliance between Ford and Volkswagen which has seen the new Amarok for the German carmaker based on the latest Ranger, Ford has now revealed the first of two new models which will use Volkswagen’s MEB platform for battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

The new model, to go on sale later this year for under 45,000 euros (about RM216,000), uses the Explorer nameplate. This name has a long history in Ford’s range and at one time, was the bestselling SUV in the world. Now it is going electric as part of Ford’s reinvention of the Ford brand in Europe. By 2030, Ford aims to have an all-electric portfolio of passenger vehicles.

The pick-up truck was once just for work and regulations (in Malaysia) before the late 1990s did not permit registration for private use. When the regulations changed, Ford was the first to show people the fun side of owning a pick-up truck with its Ranger. Built tough for workhorse duties, the Ranger was also a very capable truck able to travel over difficult terrain.

Today’s Ranger is even more capable but many people don’t realise just how capable, or they do not have an opportunity to take it to its limits. Sime Darby Auto ConneXion, the sole distributor for Ford in Malaysia, can help Ranger owners discover the capabilities of their Ranger at a course specially designed for beginners.

To be held on March 19, the Ford Ranger Getaways M4TREC Beginner 4WD Course offers any Ranger owner the chance to master his or her vehicle. Participants will also gain in-depth familiarity with their vehicle and might even discover some features which they did not realise their Ranger had.

Ford has announced its return to Formula 1 after 22 years away from the sport. Despite having been absent from F1 since 2004, Ford remains the third most successful engine manufacturer in F1 history with 10 Constructors’ championships and 13 Drivers’ championships. Between 1967 and 2004, the carmaker provided engines to no less than 67 teams.

It was present in F1 up to 2004, with its last entry being with the Jaguar team (acquired from former F1 driver Jackie Stewart) as the British carmaker was then owned by Ford. The extremely high (and rising) cost of participating in F1 was given as the reason Ford withdrew and sold its team to Red Bull (the energy drinks company) for US$1 at the end of the 2004 season.

Drawing the carmaker back to the sport it dominated in the late 1960s and 1970s is the increasing interest in key markets around the world, including the USA. Furthermore, the FIA and F1 have a commitment to sustainability with increased use of electric power as well as sustainable fuels.

Ford will use Volkswagen’s MEB platform for EVs to produce new battery electric vehicle (BEV) for the European market. This follows on from the alliance formed between the two carmakers which has so far seen Ford providing the latest Ranger truck for Volkswagen to adapt as its second generation Amarok.

The first Ford model to use the MEB will be a BEV crossover and production is expected to be underway at the Ford Electrification Centre in Cologne, Germany from 2023. Ford has confirmed one model with a total volume of around 600,000 units but a second one is expected, also likely to be a crossover based on what was shown of the BEV range in March this year.

Production of the Ford GT is planned to end this month, and 1,350 units will have been built since the model was launched in 2016. One of the final models is the GT Mk IV which has the highest levels of performance, handling and advanced technology as it is a track-only car. Developed by Ford Performance and Multimatic, it is a radically advanced supercar with its unique bodywork, powertrain and suspension.

There will be only 67 units available, the number honouring the original 1967 GT Mk IV racing car which won the Le Mans 24-Hour race.
