‘CSL’ goes back over 50 years in BMW history, to the days of 1973 E9 3.0 CSL model. It was given the ‘CSL’ (Coupe Sport Leichtbau or Coupe Sport Lightweight) badge and was intended to be a homologation model for BMW to enter the European Touring Car Championship. The designation was not used much and in fact, the new M4 CSL is the third model that has ever had it (the second was the E46 M3 CSL in 2003).

Perhaps BMW has reserved it for very special occasions and there is a special one this year with BMW M GmbH celebrating its 50th birthday. The M4 CSL is a limited edition model which has made use of the company’s long expertise in powertrain and chassis development and also lightweight design.

The 1973 3.0 CSL

Strong focus on weight-saving
Lightweight design was one of the advantages of the 1973 3.0 CSL, allowing it to win championships and this is also a strong feature in the new M4 CSL. The M engineers have brought the M4 CSL’s kerb weight to 1,625 kgs for a power-to-weight ratio of 3 kgs/bhp. Compared to the M4 Competition, its weight is 100 kgs less and with a 40 bhp increase over the M4 Competition Coupe’s 550 bhp. Peak torque of 650 Nm, from 2,750rpm and sustained all the way up to 5,950 rpm.

One of the weight-cutting measures is very visible – no rear seats, so it’s strictly a 2-seater. The front M Carbon full bucket seats are also light (24 kgs than standard seats), and the absence of the rear seats saves 21 kgs. Not visible are chassis changes such as the use of lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and special light-alloy wheels, springs and struts which saved 21 kgs.

The use of CFRP in the body deducts 11 kgs; a titanium rear silencer cuts more than 4 kgs, and a further 4 kgs was saved from the kidney grille, rear lights, floor mats and climate control. Sound levels not likely to bother the driver, switching to ultra-lightweight sound insulation (which may be better or worse) saved around 15 kgs.

The CFRP bootlid provides a 6.7 kg weight-saving. Its carbonfibre structure is visible inside through the unpainted clearcoat. It has a pronounced spoiler, referencing a similar feature of the 2003 BMW M3 CSL. The diffuser integrated into the rear apron and the exterior mirror caps are also made from CFRP.

The forged cross-spoke M light-alloy wheels have been designed exclusively for the new car and fitted with tyres size 275/35 ZR19 at the front, 285/30 ZR20 at the rear. The brake system has standard M Carbon ceramic brakes that are around 14.3 kgs lighter than the brakes on the M4 Competition Coupe. The rear silencer is made from titanium which reduces weight by 4.3 kgs compared to a conventional steel equivalent.

Engine output raised
As mentioned earlier, the 3-litre 6-cylinder engine has an extra 40 bhp extracted from it and to get this, the engineers raised boost pressure from 24.7 psi to 30.5 psi. The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with DriveLogic is said to be upgraded to match the higher power output while there are stiffer engine and transmission mounts.

Like the M4 Competition Coupe, the M4 CSL has double-joint spring strut front axle and 5-link rear axle. Standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension with electronically-controlled dampers, electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, and an M-specific version of the integrated braking system.

The suspension also has an 8 mm reduction in ride height (compared with the M4 Competition Coupe), lowering the centre of gravity. Auxiliary springs are fitted at both the front and rear axle and improve road contact in dynamic situations. The anti-roll bars at both axles and their mountings have also been specially engineered for this model.

Advanced lighting technology

BMW Laserlight headlights (which illuminate in yellow rather than white) bring to mind the look of successful GT racing cars. The rear lights use an innovative technology making its debut in a production car. All light functions use LED units, while the covers have intricate light threads woven into them, illuminated using laser technology. The threads run parallel to one another before crossing over at the outer edges to create a stunning interpretation of the hallmark BMW L-shaped rear light contour.

Performance-focussed interior
The interior design is largely the same as the M4 Competition Coupe’s, which means it allows the driver to focus on performance. M-specific displays, ergonomically optimized controls with red accents, the M-specific gear selector and the anthracite-coloured headliner create a racing aura as the driver settles in. This is enhanced by the carbonfibre interior trim strip and ‘CSL’ badging below the head restraints, on the centre console and the rear panel.

The centre console of the new BMW M4 CSL is made entirely from CFRP, the material’s distinctive structure clearly visible around the gear selector and iDrive Controller. The use of carbonfibre more than halves the weight of the centre console, a saving of around 4 kgs. The M Alcantara steering wheel features a red 12 o’clock marker, carbonfibre inlays and CFRP shift paddles.

The BMW Head-Up Display is available as an option and part of the Ultimate Road Pack. It includes M-specific elements such as a colour tachometer, Shift Lights and M View. Provided as standard are M Drive Professional and M Laptimer for drivers to make improvements in their pursuit of the ideal line and faster lap times. For example, dramatic use of oversteer and opposite lock is recorded by the M Drift Analyser, while the laptimer records and show a variety of information on both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display. Drivers can also analyze the data in detail with the BMW M Laptimer iPhone app and share it with the online community.

Production will begin in July 2022 and only 1,000 units will be available, each priced from £128,820 (about RM706,000) in the UK market.

During the second half of the 1970s, one Fiat model stood out in the World Rally Championship (WRC)  and other international rallies. It was the 131 Rally, a specially-built sedan for competition jointly produced by Fiat, Abarth and Bertone. 400 units were built to meet homologation requirements and Abarth mechanicals were installed in them.

The 131 Abarth Rally debuted in 1976 as a Group 4 entry and its track record up till the early 1980s has put it in history books as one of the legends of rallying. It ran for 6 years in the WRC, with victories at 18 international events, and captured 3 World Constructors Championship titles. Legendary drivers Markku Alen and Walter Rohrl also won their  championship titles driving the car.

This year, on the 40th anniversary of its last race, special tribute is paid to the 131 Abarth Rally with the Abarth 695 Tributo 131 Rally special series. This is a limited edition with a production run of 695 units which will be available worldwide.

225 km/h top speed
The Abarth 695 Tributo 131 Rally has a 1.4-litre T-jet engine which develops 180 bhp/250 Nm to rocket the car from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 6.7 seconds, after which it can continue on to a top speed of 225 km/h.

For this special edition, Abarth has installed Koni FSD shock absorbers on both axles and a dedicated braking system which includes aluminium Brembo calipers and 4 pistons on the front and 305 mm and 240 mm ventilated discs on the rear.

Record Monza sound system
The special equipment list includes black 17-inch alloy wheels with a diamond-cut finish and the ‘Record Monza Sovrapposto’ exhaust system – an evolution on the Record Monza system, now with four vertically overlaid terminals. The Record Monza exhaust system is named after the famous Italian circuit where Carlo Abarth achieved one of the many speed records of his racing career. The exhaust system features dual-mode technology and tailpipes that together create the unique and unmistakable Abarth sound.

The variable rear spoiler
The Abarth 695 Tributo 131 Rally naturally comes with the Spoiler ad Assetto Variabile, an aerodynamic feature which Abarth engineers developed. Just like in a race, where it is not unusual to see technicians manually fine-tune the spoiler angle so the driver can set the car’s behaviour to suit the conditions and driving style, the spoiler fitted to the car is adjustable to 12 positions. These positions range from 0° to 60°, influencing airflow in such a way that cornering stability can be improved. At the maximum a 60° angle and at a speed of 200 km/h, the aerodynamic downforce load increases by up to 42 kgs.

While the 131 Abarth Rally cars are often remembered for their green, red and white colours – which were from Alitalia, one of the main partners of Fiat’s motorsport teams – the Abarth 695 Tributo 131 Rally has a bicolour 3-layer ‘Blue Rally’ glossy livery, which reinterprets another its original colour on some of the rallycars in a contemporary manner.

‘Easter Eggs’ around the car
This is the first Scorpion vehicle which contains ‘Easter Eggs’ – tiny stylistic ‘gems’ which the designers hide to surprise customers. Some examples:  the silhouette of the 131 Rally engraved on the lower part of the car door, on the Alcantara dashboard and on the headrests of the new seats.

Specifically for the 695 cars, the livery is embellished with a roof and uprights in black Scorpion Black. The same blue can be found on the mirror caps and some details in the interiors. The sporty image is further emphasised by the Sabelt fabric seats with blue inserts and stitching inspired by those of the historic car but reinterpreted in a modern way.

Rebirth of the Abarth 1000 SP

will.i.am, well known for his association with the Black Eyed Peas  which he also founded, is more than just a singer and musician. Today, he’s a tech entrepreneur, philanthropist and was even chosen as the TIME 100 IMPACT Award winner. Recently, he’s been working on a special project with Mercedes-AMG under strict secrecy which will culminate with the presentation of the WILL.I.AMG at the Miami F1 Grand Prix this weekend.

It’s also the sixth collaboration that he is having with West Coast Customs, a customisation outfit in California, to create the one-off vehicle for the project which is known as ‘The Flip – – Innovation for Purpose’. The Flip is intended to give more students from disadvantaged communities access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education in order to be equipped with the skills required for future-focused jobs and to invent new technologies.

“I grew up in a ghetto. I grew up with hip hop. I watched legendary hip hop artist rap about Mercedes, so it was always a dream to own a Mercedes. For a lot of inner-city kids, owning a Mercedes is a symbol of progress and advancing out of struggle,” explained will.i.am. “Now I’ve reached my goal and pushed even higher by re-imagining and creating my own vision of an AMG model. But I didn’t touch the engine, because AMG really does make the best engines. The story of the founders of AMG truly inspires me and it is energizing to collaborate with like-minded people who also seek continuous improvement.”

This icon is also the focal point of the BEAR WITNESS collection that features limited-edition apparel and accessories available at the Mercedes-AMG Experience Centre in Miami and online.

The elaborate conversion and construction of this car, based on Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe,  has been captured in an extensive 6‑part documentary series, ‘DRIVE’ that will sneak preview at the May 5 reveal event.

Limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh unveiled

Lotus has had a long presence in the motorsports world which began with a racing car built by Colin Chapman, who founded the company. That was back in 1948 and from then on, the company produced numerous racing cars and sportscars, and even had a successful period in Formula 1.

Earlier this year, the company added a new division – Lotus Advanced Performance – as part of its ongoing transformation from a British sportscar company to a global performance car business and brand.

The portfolio of services that Lotus Advanced Performance will offer includes halo projects, limited editions, bespoke, experiential, the Lotus Driving Academy, motorsport, options and accessories. The first product developed by the division (in collaboration with the RML Group) is the all-new Emira GT4 racing car which was unveiled earlier this week.

This GT version of the Emira road car marks the start of a new era in performance GT racing for Lotus. Like all modern Lotus road cars which have had race-ready siblings, the Emira is no exception. Each Emira GT4 customer will receive a homologated performance machine, hand-built with lightweight motorsport components and equipment to meet the latest safety regulations.

The advanced composite bodywork makes the car exceptionally light, and it is powered by Toyota’s race-proven 400 bhp 3.5-litre V6 engine. While the Emira’s advanced exterior design is also highly aerodynamic, further optimization has come from GT4 aerodynamics.

Many hundreds of hours of validation work have taken place on the test track. Over the winter, the Emira GT4 was also run at Portimao in Portugal for a week. In addition to the better weather, it’s one of the most challenging circuits in Europe, making it the perfect destination to validate aero performance and component reliability.

Following last September’s announcement that Lotus would create a GT version of the Emira, orders started to come in and the first year’s production has all been taken up by customers. Lotus aims to fulfil customer orders for the Emira GT4 during 2022, increasing production for 2023 in line with global demand. Ex-factory pricing is from £165,000 (about RM890,000).

The world’s first automobile, built by Karl Benz, was able to travel at a maximum speed of 16 km/h. That would certainly have been very fast in 1886 when he first drove it along rough tracks in Mannheim, Germany. But before long, the challenge of building ‘the fastest car’ was taken up by many and Land Speed Records began to be listed.

The first person on the list was Frenchman Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat who took an electrically-powered Jeantaud Duc to a speed of 63.13 km/h. As an indication of how fast technological advances were taking place, just one month later, Belgian Camille Jenatzy reached 66 km/h in a GCA Dogcart. No, it was not powered by dogs but by electricity as well, like the car it beat.

By 1909, the fastest speed achieved was around 200km/h, a speed so fast that there were people who believed it would be impossible to survive because you’d simply not to be able to breathe! The challenge of going faster and faster did not diminish and in the 1920s, the British asserted dominance.

Among those who pushed cars to the limits was a mechanical engineer by the name of George Eyston. In the late 1920s, he was seriously engaged in developing and running cars that broke records. His car, called the Thunderbolt, established 3 new land speed records between 1937 and 1939. The records were set on the wide expanse of the Bonnevile Salt Flats in the American state of Utah where such events have been held for decades.

While the Thunderbolt was powered by two 37-litre, V12 Rolls-Royce aero engines, the Wraith uses a 6.6-litre V12 with an output of 632 ps and 870 Nm of torque.

His projectile-shaped machine had 3 axles, 8 wheels and weighed 7 tonnes (and that was even with the body being made from aluminium). The Thunderbolt was powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce R supercharged 37-litre, V-12 aero engines, each producing well over 2,000 horsepower. Less than 20 of these engines were ever made; so rare were they that the Thunderbolt’s engines had actually been used earlier in the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S6.B seaplane that would lay the foundations for the legendary Spitfire fighter aircraft of World War II.

The story of Eyston’s dauntless, fearless, pioneering spirit and his Thunderbolt served as inspiration for the Rolls-Royce Land Speed Collection, a series specially designed and built by the company’s Bespoke division. The two cars are Black Badge versions of the Wraith and Dawn and of the 35 units of the Wraith available, one was acquired by a customer in Malaysia.

The Wraith Landspeed is presented in a specially created two-tone finish which marries Black Diamond Metallic with a new Bespoke colour, Bonneville Blue. This specially developed hue bears particular significance to the Collection, with a colour that transitions under sunlight from light blue to silver, illustrating the reflections of both the vast sky over Bonneville and the crisp salt flats on the Thunderbolt’s aluminium body.

However, Anas Zawawi Khalid, Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur, suggested a change in the colour scheme which the customer agreed to. Instead of the light coloured flanks and dark bonnet, there is a reversal of the colours with Bonneville Blue on the bonnet instead. To add to the unique difference, the grille is also in chrome instead of black, which is the usual colour for Black Badge versions.

To associate the Wraith with the Thunderbolt, the Bespoke team of skilled craftsmen and craftswomen read everything they could about the record-breaking events that took place on the desert-like salt flats in the 1930s. In particular, they learnt about how, while rocketing over the ground, Eyston had to hold the car on a very precise course – to deviate even slightly would be disastrous at the extreme speeds. To help him guide the car, his team painted darkened track lines on the salt surface for Eyston to follow – effectively his sole means of keeping the Thunderbolt straight at over 560 km/h.

This simple yet ingenious idea is recalled in the Wraith by perforated line in the upper-centre of the steering wheel, which continues through the centreline of the driver’s seat and can also be seen on the rear right seat. It is subtle and is only evident when the left seats are compared to the right ones.

A cracking dashboard?
Then there’s the fascia to the right of the classic analogue clock. At a glance, it seems like the surface is cracking… which would be shocking to see on a Rolls-Royce! But it is not actually a defect in the material: the ‘cracks’ are reproductions of those on the surface of the dry and dusty salt flats. The tiny fissures form a distinctive texture that was digitally retraced from the surface itself, onto the wooden veneer of the fascia (and console lids as well).

Records commemorated for all time
The interior references continue with the Thunderbolt’s unique silhouette, and the records it achieved, depicted on the polished, anodized aluminium surface of the Landspeed Collection’s front tunnel.

According to the record books, Eyston’s third and final land-speed record of 575.57 km/h stood for 341 days. In the Landspeed Collection Cars, it is commemorated for all time, engraved into the housing of the clock alongside the name ‘Bonneville’, in homage to where the record was set. Based on the instrument dials from the Thunderbolt, with yellow and black details, the black-tipped hands of the clock are inspired by the arrows painted on the original car’s exterior.

Recreating the night sky
The Bonneville Salt Flats are so vast, open – and with no artificial light – that they are an ideal place to look at the stars in the exceptionally dark night skies. In the Wraith Landspeed, the Starlight Headliner on the ceiling perfectly recreates the skies as they appeared over the Flats on September 16, 1938, the date on which Eyston and his Thunderbolt set their record. The constellations are precisely marked using 2,117 individually placed fibreoptic ‘stars’, the largest number of stars in a Rolls-Royce Wraith Starlight Headliner ever featured.

Paying tribute to the man himself, Eyston’s military honours are marked with a subtle detail in the driver’s door, made in the same Grosgrain weave silk and colours to match the original medal ribbons. The armrests on both the passenger side and below the ribbon detail are specially padded to give them the comfortable ‘club armchair’ quality that Eyston favoured in his driving seats, much to the amusement of his fellow racers.

The Thunderbolt was originally left unpainted, which caused an unexpected problem. During the first record attempts, the photo-electric timing equipment was unable to detect the polished aluminium body against the searing white of the Salt Flats’ surface, making accurate timing impossible. Eyston’s brilliantly simple solution was to paint a large black arrow with a yellow circle on the side, to heighten visibility when travelling at great speed. Hence, the yellow inserts around the inlets on either side below the front bumper.

Like many British sportscars of the 1950s, the Austin-Healey 100 has become an iconic model because of its historical significance. Built between 1953 and 1956, it was the first model of the association between Austin and Donald Healey which would last for 20 years. Over 14,600 cars were built and those that are still in existence today are valuable collectors items.

For those who want this piece of British motoring history but cannot acquire one, Caton, a new company specialising in design and creation of ultra-exclusive, highly aspirational luxury products will restore and modernise the model – known as Healey by Caton – as its first creation.

Only 25 units to be hand-built
It will be extremely rare too, with a limited run of 25 hand-built restored cars at the factory in England. Each car will have a unique combination of design and engineering comparable to established carmakers, with traditional craftsmanship techniques.

Taking a forensic yet sympathetic approach, Caton’s designers have introduced a subtle smoothness to the Healey’s instantly recognisable lines, gently amplifying the visual dynamism while fully respecting the engineering and design principles of the original car’s creator.

The execution of the cleaner, smoother look has been applied across the entire body, with all seams and beading removed. This is evident in the new front aluminium fenders, which feature a more clamshell-like construction. Despite being built on an English Wheel, using traditional methods, they are entirely free of the beading that ran through the centre of the original items. A new air vent and a finisher have been integrated into the flanks, visually amplifying the diving line that runs along the side of the car.

Refining the design
For the most part, though, Caton has refined, rather than added to the Healey’s body. The rear bumpers are gone, as are the external boot hinges, replaced with new internal hinges running on modern gas struts. The boot handle is deleted too, and the lid is now opened by an internal release mechanism, run by a new, modern Caton key.

“To remain true to the car’s DNA, we asked ourselves: ‘What would Healey have done when building a car in the Fifties if they had the tools and manufacturing techniques that we are in the unique position to have at our disposal today?’” said Darryl Scriven, who directed the design work.

Scriven refers to technology that enables a complete 3D scan of each donor car. A Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine enabled the fabricators to work to tolerances of just 0.2 mm, creating ultra-perfect panel gaps that add to the beautification of the bodyshell. Yet the team also deployed technology that would have been entirely familiar to those building the car in period, such as an English Wheel, which was used to hand-roll the aluminium panels.

The car is powered by a 185 bhp/264 Nm 2954 cc 4-cylinder engine, not far different from the 2660 cc displacement of the original’s powerplant. Based on an original Austin-Healey block, the engine is completely stripped down, fully lightened, balanced, and then refurbished to zero kilometres. It is further enhanced with a full steel crankshaft, upgraded bearing shells, high compression pistons, a race camshaft with more aggressive lobes and roller rockers. Larger Twin H8 carburettors (yes, carburettors!)and gas flow inlets provide enhance throttle response, while a race side-exit exhaust system adds further to aural appeal.

The engine, and most of the car’s mechanical components, are the work of the world’s leading Healey specialists J.M.E. Healeys, who have strong historical links with the original Healey company. Jonathan Everard, who founded J.M.E., and his father Harold, actually worked for the Donald Healey Motor Company in earlier years. Today, the company is run by Jonathan’s sons and it is based in Warwick, which was the original home of the Healey company.

The car benefits from a new chassis, strengthened and modified at known weak points – including the addition of new front and rear bulkheads – identified from J.M.E.’s decades of experience in restoring, servicing, and rallying Healeys. Strengthened driveshafts transfer the performance to the road but there are no electronic traction or stability controls to dilute the driving experience. Nor is there ABS, in keeping with the purist driving feel, but all four wheels have disc brakes.

Interior modernised with focus on comfort
Inside, the cockpit is totally modernised with a focus on the very best in contemporary and period materials. Interestingly, the original Healey 100s were designed and built for people who were shorter back then and many of today’s drivers may be somewhat cramped. Thanks to a redesign of the transmission tunnel and new 5-speed manual gearbox, there has been a transformation in cabin space. As a result, the Healey by Caton is a highly practical sportscar, offering today’s drivers the feeling of a classic but with comfort as well.

With production of the Healey by Caton limited to 25 units, the company will be able to liaise with each customer on a highly personal, one-to-one basis. The future owners can visit the factory on a regular basis and besides touring the facilities, they can also watch every stage of their car being built.

Caton will offer the ability to add completely bespoke and personal touches, whether for the car’s paint finish (in any colour imaginable) or choosing from the extensive array of materials and trim suite available for the car’s interior.

The pricing with a car included is likely to be in the region of £395,000 (about RM2.2 million) but the official announcement will be made at Salon Prive London on April 21. Production will commence during this quarter of the year.

Yokohama revives production of classic tyres for old car models

Virgil Abloh may not be a familiar name to many, but he was a collaborator with Mercedes-Benz on various design studies, particularly related to luxury products. Abloh, who passed away last year, was an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, artistic director, industrial designer, fashion designer, musician, DJ and philanthropist. As such, his visions and ideas were of much interest to Gorden Wagener, Mercedes‑Benz Group AG Chief Design Officer.

Together, they worked on projects such as Project Gelandewagen and Project MAYBACH and now, Abloh’s cooperation with Mercedes–Maybach culminates in the launch of a limited-edition bespoke S-Class and capsule collection, inspired by Project MAYBACH. It’s the final chapter of Project MAYBACH and is available in a strictly limited run of 150 units.

The launch coincides with the release of a capsule collection designed by Abloh and in collaboration with Off‑White. It has been developed in connection to the Project MAYBACH electric showcar and is exclusively available to buy on Off‑White, Farfetch and Maybach Icons of Luxury online stores, as well as Off‑White stores in select markets.

The limited edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh is a fully equipped Mercedes‑Maybach S‑Class S680 which follows the tradition of the ultra-luxury brand that has a history of over a century. It has been created by Mercedes‑Benz’ most specialised customization and craftmanship team. The exterior features the unique two-tone colour combination created for Project MAYBACH, with the upper part lacquered in a glossy obsidian black and the lower part, side flanks and special forged rims painted in a sand hue.

Superlative levels of craftsmanship will be evident throughout the cabin which has an identical two-tone colour scheme. The 4-seat configuration, steering wheel, doors, lower dashboard and ceiling are lined in black and sand-coloured nappa leather, complete with sand-coloured decor trims and strips. The highpile floormats are black with a sand-coloured leather border and embroidered Mercedes‑Maybach logo.

To enhance its monolithic appearance, the window frames are painted, and a special Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logo is inscribed on the piano black middle of the centre console, rear cushions, head restraints and door sill panel.

Unique to the limited-edition S‑Class is a bespoke user interface which presents the driver with an even more luxurious variation of the Maybach MBUX suite of cutting-edge technologies. Han picked visual elements are used to enrich the digital content. For decades, car designers have been inspired by fighter jets, with American designers being so infatuated with the tailfins and jet engines that they put them on cars of the 1950s. In the decades that followed and even up till today, the inspiration from flying machines remains and it’s not only with the exotic and sleek supercars. This was evident when, back in 2005, a young Proton designer said that the Savvy’s design also had some inspiration from the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter.

At Lamborghini, the designers would of course have been much influenced by jet fighters and the highly aerodynamic shapes make this obvious. The Reventon, which was unveiled 15 years ago, was a clear example of such influence and Lamborghini even mentioned the aircraft that was the source of inspiration: the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. Many also saw elements of the F-117 with the sharp and angular form, especially with the dark finish.

20 units for sale
The Reventon, displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, appeared like a one-off concept with an extreme design but it was to be an exclusive model built for sale to 20 customers. The ex-factory price then was quoted as 1 million euros, which made it the most expensive Lamborghini up till that time.

The supercar was based on the Murcielago LP640 and had similar proportions as the Gallardo as well. It was not so obvious then but much of the design language used for the car would later appear in the Aventador as well.

“The Reventon is the most extreme of all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murcielago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President & CEO of Lamborghini then (and still in the same position today).

Lamborghini’s naming tradition
Keeping to Lamborghini tradition, the name was that of a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943.

Like today’s Lamborghini models, the edges of the body are sharp, with precise lines and clean surfaces – these are ingredients of a style reduced to the essential. Each element is created exactly according to its function; ornaments and decorations are totally foreign to a Lamborghini.

With the Reventon, the Centro Stile designers developed this philosophy with an extremely precise, technically striking style that mimicked the fastest fighter jets. The bodyshell was made of a composite carbonfibre material (CFC) and steel, with the exterior components glued and fixed on.

The front was characterized by the acute angle of the central ‘arrow’ and by the powerful forward-facing air intakes. Although they did not supply air directly to the turbine like an airplane, an abundant volume of air was still necessary to cool the carbon brake disks and the 6-cylinder calipers.

From the time of the legendary Countach, Lamborghini’s V12 models have had ‘scissors doors’ which open upwards. With their asymmetric configuration on the Reventon, the large air intakes below the doors provided an example of the extreme coherence with which a Lamborghini fulfils its function. On the driver’s side, it was large to increase the flow of oil to the radiator. On the passenger’s side, the air intake was flat because, in this case, it only had to ensure the flow below the floor.

The aerodynamically optimised flat floor structure terminated at the rear with a diffuser featuring an accentuated shape. This guaranteed superior road grip and stability even at the 340 km/h the car was capable of. Because of such a high speed, aerodynamics had to be optimized.  The airflow and the section of the variable geometry air intakes of the engine and the rear spoiler (adjustable) were specially shaped and designed after lengthy wind tunnel studies.

The engine was the classic 12-cylinder unit with a 6.5-litre displacement and tuned to produce 650 bhp/660 Nm. For super-fast and precise shifting, there was a robotised e.gear system with a permanent Viscous Traction 4-wheel drive system to get all that power to the road.

The engine cover was made of glass laminate with open ventilation slits that offered a glimpse of the 12 cylinders within. The glass also featured the marked arrow angle that characterized the design from the front to the rear spoiler.

The Lamborghini designers’ love for detail was illustrated by the fuel tank lid: a small mechanical work of art, achieved by milling a solid aluminium block. The combination lights transformed the incisiveness of the design into light, with the front having LEDs alongside Bi-Xenon headlights. Seven LEDs served as Daytime Running Lights while another nine diodes were used for the indicator and hazard lights. Because of the high temperature in the rear lower section of the car, special heatproof LEDs were used for the indicator and hazard lights, brake lights and rear lights with a triple arrow optical effect.

Aircraft display for driver
The cockpit of the Reventon certainly had a lot of aircraft inspiration, with the instrument panel housing three TFT liquid crystal displays. The instruments were housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminium block, protected by a carbonfibre casing. At the touch of a button, the driver could choose from two vehicle information display modes. Today, with fully graphic and digital displays, a driver can customize the instrumentation even more.

An interesting feature was the g-force meter, something which was novel then but would later appear in some high-performance models. This display showed the dynamic drive forces, longitudinal acceleration during acceleration and braking, as well as transversal acceleration around bends. The forces were represented by the movement of an indicator on a graduated 3D grid depending on the direction and intensity of the acceleration. It took less than a year for the Reventon project to progress from the first ideas to the finished car. Centro Stile, which was just a few years old then, was able to carry out the entire design process at Lamborghini for the first time without any external collaboration with design studios like Bertone.

Two years after unveiling the Reventon coupe, Lamborghini showed a roadster version at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. It had a slightly more powerful engine but the top speed was 10 km/h less. Lamborghini offered it for 1.1 million euros but never revealed just how many were sold, although it said that there would be less than 20 units.

The original Reventon production was done between 2007 and 2009 and besides the 20 units that were sold, one more unit was built and is displayed at the Lamborghini Museum of Technologies. Half of the cars made are known to have gone to the USA and the rest went to other countries. The Reventon was one of the first ‘few-offs’ from the brand and remains as one its most iconic models too.

15 years ago, Aston Martin revealed a new car built around the premise of fitting the most compact and driver-focussed model with the largest and most potent series production engine. It was the V12 Vantage RS Concept that would go into production and through successive version that have formed an iconic bloodline.

This lineage is now nearing its end and it ‘goes out on the highest of highs’, as Aston Martin’s CEO, Tobias Moers, says with the fastest, fiercest and most dynamically accomplished version of them all. While other manufacturers present ‘First Editions’ of their new models, Aston Martin is presenting the ‘Final Edition’ of the V12 Vantage. There will never be a car like it again.

Production of the V12 Vantage is strictly limited to 333 units, all of which have already been taken right after the new V12 Vantage was confirmed in December last year. As with many such limited editions, the number who want it exceeds the supply so there is a register of interest for hopefuls who wait for someone to change their mind. The first customers will get their cars before June this year.

The engine is the heart of every Aston Martin but never has it been more so than in this car which is  the fastest and most powerful Vantage ever built. The quad-cam 60-degree 5.2-litre V12 develops 700 ps at 6,500 rpm and 753 Nm, fully available between 1,800 rpm and 6,000 rpm. That can send the V12 Vantage from standstill to almost 100 km/h in around 3.4 seconds, and on to a top speed claimed to be 320 km/h.

While the muscular engine provides the strong propulsion, extensive weight-saving measures have also  brought the overall weight down so that it has a power-to-weight ratio of 390 ps per ton, or more than 20% compared to the V8-powered Vantage.

The power flows through a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and mechanical Limited-Slip Differential mounted at the rear of the car. Unique transmission calibration enhances shift speeds and driver interaction, with learnings taken from the V12 Speedster and Vantage F1 Edition. This specially calibrated software delivers a level of shift refinement and usability which is beyond that seen on dual clutch gearboxes.

The weight-saving measures include a carbonfibre front bumper, clamshell bonnet, front fenders and side sills, composite rear bumper and decklid, and a special centre-mounted twin-exit exhaust system. Tuned to ensure the V12 Vantage has a voice to match its looks and performance, this new exhaust system is made from lightweight 1 mm stainless-steel, saving some 7.2 kgs compared with the system fitted to the Vantage. Even the battery is a specially sourced lightweight unit.

To complement the engine performance and character is the dynamic driving experience, improved in this last V12 Vantage. It comes with a new adaptive damping suspension system including new anti-roll bars, bushes, and spring and damper assemblies. Suspension spring rates have been increased by 50% at the front and 40% at the rear, combined with top mount stiffness increasing by 13% and new anti-roll bars are 5% stiffer at the front and 41% softer at the rear. To maintain comfort for the driver, a secondary tender spring has been introduced to the rear.

Body stiffness has also been increased with additional front and rear sheer panels, a rear suspension tower strut brace and fuel tank bracing, increasing body stiffness by 8% and lateral stiffness  by 6.7%, giving the optimum platform stiffness for superior driving dynamics.

For stopping power, Aston Martin has installed its Carbon Ceramic Braking system as standard, saving 23 kgs in weight. This comes with 410 mm x 38 mm discs with 6-piston calipers at the front, and 360 mm x 32 mm discs paired with 4-piston calipers at the rear. The CCB discs maintain consistent braking performance at high temperatures and have been engineered to resist brake fade at very high temperatures.

Moving to the interior, the V12 Vantage retains the instantly recognisable layout of the current Vantage, whilst signifying its halo positioning with a Sports Plus Seat trimmed in full semi-aniline leather featuring ‘Wings’ quilt and perforation pattern as standard.

There is also a new carbonfibre performance seat with exposed twill carbonfibre shell and manual 6-way adjustment available as an option, offering a supportive seat design for those enhanced driving dynamics and a distinct design character. This is an Aston Martin patented design inspired by motorsport, optimised to save 7.3 kgs without compromising comfort.

Woven leather or Alcantara seat inserts, trim inlays and the anodised rotary dials found in the centre console can coloured in a way to match or contrast with the exterior body or graphic colour, providing a more subtle injection of colour inside the cabin. With so many design combinations available, it would not be a surprise to see no two cars the same.

Lotus will enter the electric era on March 29, 2022 when its Type 132 debuts. There will be no more combustion-engined sportscars from the company and the last one is the Emira which has been seeing increased interest following overwhelmingly positive global coverage of prototype ‘first drives’.

First Editions with V6 or 4-cylinder engines
The company has confirmed full details on the price and spec of the Emira First Edition which will be fully loaded with ‘desirable’ technology, infotainment and comfort features, plus unique badging. There will be a V6 version as well as an entry-level 4-cylinder version.

The 4-cylinder Emira is powered by AMG’s M139 direct injection engine, manufactured specifically for the car with hardware changes to suit mid-mounted placement and new software to give it a true Lotus character.

World’s most powerful 4-cylinder engine
First introduced in 2019, the M139 is still the world’s most powerful 4-cylinder engine homologated for road use (up to 208 bhp/litre) and is used in the Mercedes-AMG A45, along with the CLA45 and GLA45. Its twin-scroll turbocharger with roller bearings is optimized for fast spool-up and minimum lag, while the exhaust system has been designed by Lotus exclusively for the Emira.

The engine is coupled to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with paddle-shifter – a first for Lotus. “It’s a bespoke rear-wheel drive variant of the transmission developed by Lotus in collaboration with AMG. On top of that, the gearshift strategy has been defined by the Lotus team as part of the car’s performance attributes. It is unique to the Emira and optimized for the best blend of outstanding driving engagement and performance, fuel consumption and emissions,” revealed Gavan Kershaw, Director, Vehicle Attributes at Lotus.

The 360 bhp engine comes with a unique engine bay cover and C-pillar badging. As with the Emira V6 First Edition, this version offers a high level of standard equipment and is available with a variety of ‘no-cost’ optional finishes and materials to enable customers to personalize the car to their own style.

The car rides on 20-inch ultra-lightweight V-spoke forged alloy wheels, diamond-cut to create a premium 2-tone finish. Two-piece brake discs – with branded calipers in either red, black, yellow or silver – are part of the First Edition spec, plus a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System so the driver doesn’t have to make physical checks.

Additional features
Exterior details include LED lights all round, a titanium exhaust finisher, heated power-fold door mirrors and rear parking sensors. The Lower Black Pack is fitted as standard, which means the front bumper air blades, front splitter, side sills and rear diffuser are all in finished in gloss black.

The Emira First Edition with the 4-cylinder engine costs £59,995 (about RM330,000), while the First Edition with the V6 costs £71,995 (about RM396,000). Deliveries of the V6 start towards the end of this year but the entry-level 4-cylinder version will only be available in 2023.
