The new vehicle market in China is the biggest in the world, having overtaken the US market in 2009. Last year, around 26.3 million new vehicles were sold, about 15 million more than the US volume. Every manufacturer would like to sell in China as even a small share of the market still means big volumes. However, apart from its own regulations, the China market also has some specific requirements which need to be met if a model is to appeal to the consumers and sell well.

And because of the potential volumes, foreign manufacturers are willing to develop models or alter existing models to meet the tastes of the Chinese customer. These tastes extend to styling and also size, with extended wheelbases being favoured.

One example is the Ford Explorer SUV which was recently unveiled in China. The model, an extremely popular SUV in America, has been sold in China since 2012 and for the latest generation, Ford has given it an appearance and features that are specifically for the market.

The Explorer for China was developed in China, at Ford’s design centre in Shanghai. The company’s sixth global design studio, the China Design Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that also encompasses a full showroom and in-house clay workshop.

The design team is a fusion of east and west, with 75% of the staff being local but maintaining close connections to the design teams globally. With their international outlook and local insights, this diverse group was given the task of designing the model for the Chinese market.

“Being the first time the Explorer was designed outside of North America, it was important that it continues its successful heritage of pioneering innovation and adventure whilst being modernized for the progressive China market,” said Simon Brook, Chief Designer of Ford China Design Centre. Elaborating on further differences when it comes to design, he said: “We know our Chinese customers value a high degree of sophistication, luxury and premium refinement, from exterior to interior.”

The process began with the creation of hundreds of detailed sketches to define the thematic direction. These themes were then narrowed down to strong proposals that ran from luxury to progressive to bold, to ensure that the optimum balance was achieved in the sense of strength and luxury while staying true to the Explorer heritage. High-tech solutions such as Virtual Reality and digital review tools were used to evaluate the themes from the sketch phase before committing and identifying the core design directions.

Brook defines the ‘Progressive energy in strength’ mantra as being ‘all about taking Ford design heritage and that trust, and then innovating, and taking us somewhere new’. The Explorer design fully integrates the design DNA of the Explorer and combines it with modern Chinese aesthetics.

The key visual signatures of the Explorer heritage – such as the connected grille to lamps, C-clamp rear lighting signature and an open and expansive cabin – are all retained in the latest Explorer. The luxury yacht inspiration can be found throughout the  exterior design. The new 21-inch Turbine fan wheels spin like a ship’s propeller, the iconic C-pillar graphic echoes the mast of a luxury sailboat, while the front end captures the essence of a ship’s bow as it breaks through the waves.

With the luxury-yacht feel retained and established, the key to the new Explorer’s design innovations for the Chinese market were to be found by leveraging the ‘Progressive Energy in Strength’ Chinese design DNA to capture three main principles: Agile, Responsive, Commanding.

High-tech interior
The philosophy behind the main interior elements is based on three fundamental aesthetic principles: clarity in build, harmony within composition and detailed craftsmanship. Aside from the overall proportion and form language, Chinese customers pay close attention to the mastery of craftsmanship and are more willing to embrace new, advanced technologies.

Explorer for China has a very wide display screen in the middle, whereas the US version (below) has the portrait-oriented screen that is also found in the new Ranger and Mach-E.

The overall interior architecture and prominent 27-inch touchscreen both reflect the commanding presence of the exterior, giving the Explorer a ‘Masculine Presence’ while ensuring it lives up to the ‘Tech Enhanced’ demands for well-integrated high technology. That’s further heightened through the newly designed instrument panel and centre console with its strong horizontal emphasis.

Time spent within the vehicle and the overall driving experience were considerations that remained at the forefront throughout the design process, with ‘customer voices’ prominently declaring comfort to be equally as important as safety and reliability. Driving an Explorer had to remain a rewarding experience, which necessitated finding a balance between comfort and technology. This was achieved via the harmonious integration of the technology itself and its intuitive usages, combining them with experiences that stimulate the senses.

New seating
In order to improve physical comfort, and place an emphasis on ‘Premium Quality and Solidity’, Ford’s designers came up with new seating with wider seat dimensions and fuller side bolsters to enable an optimally comfortable seating posture.

A standout feature is the unique China seat material and patterns designed in cooperation with Eagle Ottawa. Via the application of high-definition technology, the design team was able to express extremely fine detailing and new innovative patterns that would not have been possible using traditional quilting techniques, resulting in a design that is immaculate in its precision without sacrificing functionality.

As expressed through the interior colour scheme, the premium brown and black theme represents a confident presence by projecting an image of strength and sophisticated adventure, while the ruby and black theme represents an exquisite premium expression combining a commanding quality suffused with elegance and a premium feel through the accent colours and selected finishes.

There’s no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives in different ways. The situation has now become endemic, meaning we have to live with COVID-19 being around, but life can progress to some degree of normalcy.

The next-generation Ford Ranger has arrived in Malaysia and also joining the range before the end of the year will be the new Ranger Raptor. Developed by Ford Performance, the Ranger Raptor has proven to be the ultimate Ranger which blends raw power with mechanical and technical precision to create the most advanced Ranger ever.

The big news for performance fans is the introduction of a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 producing up to 392 ps at 5,650rpm and 583 Nm at 3,500rpm tuned by Ford Performance. However, the 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel 4-cylinder engine will also be available in markets where a smaller displacement is more practical. Malaysia would be one of them.

The 2-litre Bi-turbo engine with high-pressure Commonrail Direct Injection is already a familiar powerplant as it is used in the latest Ranger Wildtrak. With two turbochargers, the engine (for the Raptor) pushes out 213 ps, with a massive 500 NM of torque.

All that power and torque flows through Ford’s own 10-speed automatic transmission which has been specially calibrated to work perfectly with the turbocharged engine. Not only is power delivery smooth but gear changes are also quick and precise with advanced programming to ensure the right gear for every situation.

With an electronically-controlled active exhaust system that amplifies the engine note in 4  selectable drive modes (Quiet, Normal, Sport and Baja), the Raptor’s vocal character ranges from mild to wild. Drivers can choose their preferred engine sound by pressing a button on the steering wheel or by selecting a drive mode.

While there are similarities, the new Ranger Raptor has a unique chassis when compared to latest Ranger. A series of unique mounts and reinforcements, for elements including the C-pillar, load box and spare wheel, as well as unique frames for the jounce bumper, shock tower and rear shock bracket all combine to give the vehicle much more capability in extreme conditions.

The suspension is completely redesigned, with all-new tough, lightweight aluminium upper and lower control arms, long travel front and rear suspension and refined Watt’s link rear end designed to deliver more control across rough terrain at high speed.

The new suspension upgrades in the Ranger Raptor make the most of the new FOX Live Valve dampers. The suspension adapts in real time to enable exceptional on-road body control while absorbing corrugations and bigger ruts off-road with ease ensuring maximum control and performance.

Soaking up those humps and bumps are next-generation FOX 2.5-inch Live Valve Internal Bypass shock absorbers with cutting-edge control technology offering position-sensitive damping capability. These shock absorbers are the most sophisticated ever on Ranger Raptor and are filled with Teflon-infused oil that reduces friction by around 50% compared to those on the previous Raptor.

While the hardware is FOX, the tuning and development work was carried out by Ford Performance using a mixture of computer-aided engineering and real-world testing. Everything from adjusting the spring rates to setting the ride height, valve tuning and honing the ride zones was performed to create the perfect balance between comfort, control, stability and traction on-road and off-road.

In addition to working with the drive modes, the system works in the background to prepare the Ranger Raptor for different conditions. As the shocks compress, different zones within the bypass system give exactly the amount of support needed for the travel being used and work in reverse as the shocks rebound back to full height.

The Ranger Raptor’s ability to tackle rough terrain is further enhanced with tough underbody protection. The front bashplate is almost double the size of the standard Ranger bashplate and made from 2.3 mm-thick high-strength steel. This bashplate, combined with the engine undershield and transfer case shield, provides protection for key components like the radiator, steering system, front cross member, engine sump and front differential.

For the first time, the Ranger Raptor gets an advanced permanent 4-wheel drive system with an all-new electronically controlled on-demand 2-speed transfer case, combined with front and rear locking differentials, a feature that hardcore off-roaders will appreciate.

Unlike other pick-up trucks in the market with bodykits to just give a sportier image, the Ranger Raptor’s was specially developed by Ford Performance. The flared fenders accommodate a choice of two muscular 17-inch wheel designs, one with beadlock capability, and each wrapped in BFGoodrich all-terrain tyres.

Functional vents, aero features, and tough, new-design cast aluminium side steps help enhance the look and functionality of the truck. At the rear, LED taillights provide a signature link to the front, while the precision grey rear bumper features an integrated step pad and towbar that is tucked up high to aid the truck’s departure angle.

Inside, the theme continues to emphasize the off-road performance and high-energy nature of the exterior. The cabin features all-new, jet fighter-inspired sports seats – both in the front and rear – that are not only more comfortable but more supportive during high-speed cornering.

When the first Ranger Raptor was launched in Malaysia, its RM209,000 pricetag was thought to be excessive. But much to SDAC’s surprise, the model was in high demand. It was just the thing for the hardcore types who could get a factory-ready truck with genuine high performance – and with a warranty too.

The Next-Generation Ford Ranger Is Here!

Ahead of its sales launch, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) previewed the new-generation Ford Ranger today. This can be considered the fourth generation of the pick-up truck which was originally conceived as Ford’s idea of an ‘ASEAN Car’ in the mid-1990s. Its development was partly inspired by the creation of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) as a single trading bloc. Products could be exchanged among ASEAN countries without import duties so manufacturers could set up large factories in one location for economies of scale and supply to neighbouring countries without tax penalties.

Ford (in partnership with Mazda) chose Thailand to build a huge factory in Rayong on the eastern seaboard for its new model called the Ranger, which succeeded the Courier. For the Malaysian market, the timing was perfect as regulations has just changed (in the late 1990s) to permit private registration of pick-up trucks. With the Ranger’s stylish design and more passenger car-like features, it very quickly became a top-seller, accounting for 51% of all trucks sold in Malaysia in its early years.

2022 see a new generation of the model which has by now become a very global product, made in Thailand and South Africa, and exported to some 180 countries. For this new generation, Ford has no longer collaborated with Mazda (which has instead teamed up with Isuzu for its new truck) and has partnered Volkswagen (which makes its Ranger-derived product the new Amarok).

Familiar design
Pick-up trucks generally have similar profiles – a cab up front and a long cargo bed at the back, with lots of ground clearance. Apart from a few exceptions, they all sit on a chassis frame (or ladder frame) which has been the case for decades. This type of construction, with the cab bolted on, is stronger and can handle heavy loads better. It’s also more resistant to flexing, an important point when driving in rough terrain.

However, the styling is where the differentiation is, and Ford’s designers have kept the new Ranger stylishly rugged. According to Max Tran, who led the design team for the model, they looked at nature for inspiration as well as the F-Series trucks and also the previous Rangers.

The front end is bolder with more distinct elements but the most eye-catching are the two ‘C-clamp’ LED lighting units around the large headlights. These serve as daylight running lights (DRLs) and certainly make the new Ranger recognisable from a distance. The same theme is used for the tail lights as well.

The dimensions of the new Ranger are roughly the same as before, but the wheelbase is 50 mm longer, and the tracks have also been widened by 50 mm. The extended wheelbase moves the front wheels forward so that the overhang is reduced, making for a better approach angle. The widened tracks allow the body to be slightly wider, which makes a difference in the cargo bay.

Since the second generation, the brand badges have been enlarged to make them more visible from far. This time round, ‘RANGER’ has been stamped into the lower section of the tailgate panel, giving a rugged look to the vehicle. On the top of the tailgate is a hint of a spoiler, helping to influence airflow in some beneficial way.

As before, some versions have an ‘easy-lift’ bar under the tailgate which makes opening and closing really easy. The tailgate is normally a heavy piece and you need two hands and a bit of effort to lift it but with the Ranger, you can use one hand to close it.

Proven powertrains
As before, there are two 2-litre diesel powertrain choices – the Bi-Turbo and Single Turbo. Both have received improvements, particularly in reduction of NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). The output remains the same, though, with the Bi-Turbo putting out 210 ps/500 Nm, and the Single Turbo generating 170 ps/405 Nm. Because the Ranger is sold widely in ASEAN, where governments are promoting biodiesel strongly, the engines can run on diesel blends up to B20 with no problem.

Also carrying over from before, the Single Turbo engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, while the more powerful engine gets a 10-speed automatic transmission which has been updated for more efficiency with closer ratios. Ten ratios is a lot but it does allow for higher ratios to keep revs down for efficiency while, at the same time, having low ratios for strong pulling power when needed. The manual transmission is actually new and was four years in development across 4 continents and has a new gear set for smoother shifts.

To improve cooling in the engine bay, the structure around the front end is hydro-formed. This allows for extra space in the structure around the radiator, and also makes it possible for other powertrains in future (an electrified one, perhaps?). There’s also a dedicated space under the bonnet for the installation of a second battery for use as an auxiliary power source to keep camping accessories running.

There are also two drivetrains and both have electronic management with shift-on-the-fly capability. However, only the top Wildtrak version has the sophisticated electronically managed 4×4 system that intelligently delivers power to the wheels. A rotary dial is used for the first time for selection and there are four modes – 2WD High, 4WD High, 4WD Low and automatic 4WD. The other versions have the more traditional 2-wheel drive High and Low range transfer case.

There’s also another set of drive modes to suit different types of surfaces conditions, from mud and sand to normal roads as well as for fuel-saving. The Wildtrak gets 6 modes which include the different terrain settings but the other versions get only 4 modes for normal, economy, towing or slippery surfaces.

The platform has similarities to the one used before but it is not identical. It’s an evolved version which has the rear suspension dampers shifted outboard of the frame rails. The aim has been to allow more tuning range with a better balance between comfort and durability. With trucks being used more on-road than off-road, the comfort aspect is desired more.

Flexible multi-function cabin
Each generation of the Ranger has seen a new approach to interior design, influenced by feedback from customers as well as themes chosen by the design teams. The third generation, for example, had some elements inspired by Casio G-Shock watches which the chief designer was impressed by. This time round, more than 5,000 people were interviewed to find out what to improve and what was expected.

The result is a flexible, modern cabin space that is more functional for family use as well as for work. To meet this requirement, Ford has provided smart and connected technologies and features, with more comfort and storage options. Digi-graphics are dominant on the instrument panel and also a tablet-like centre display which looks like the one in the Mach-E SUV.

The portrait orientation of the centre touchscreen display provides more surface area so that more menu elements can be displayed. With a horizontal orientation, the menu may need to be layered, adding time to the operation for the driver. The vertical panel also displays the 360-degree + overhead view that allows the driver to see all sides of the vehicle.

There are two centre consoles between the seats and the Wildtrak gets the ‘advanced’ one with an electric parking brake tab (no lever) and the rotary dial for the drive modes. The other versions continue with the conventional handbrake lever on one side. All versions have the option of manual gear selection and this is done by a rocker switch on the side of the shift lever knob. It’s been used for a long time and is common in American vehicles, instead of paddles on the steering wheel.

There are USB and 12V power points around the cabin (and even a 3-pin one in the cargo bay). With many people installing dashcams nowadays, the interior designers have also provided one USB socket at the top of the windscreen area to power the device without having a cable dangling down. And for those who have smartphones that can charge without cables, there’s also a charging pad.

With the second generation Ranger, Ford provided a slide-out tray for the front passenger but that idea probably didn’t catch on so they omitted it later on. For the latest Ranger, besides the rather small glovebox, there’s a horizontal space above it which can be used for a small umbrella or small items. There are, of course, the requisite cupholders with sizes that have been thoroughly researched for universal use.

The instrument panel is now fully digital with an 8-inch TFT display that provides the driver with a wide range of information. To ease the driver’s workload is SYNC4a which is the latest version of Ford’s own connectivity software that was introduced in 2019. It offers enhanced conversational voice recognition, OTA update capability, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

With this new Ranger, the interior designers have gone even further in making the cabin feel like a car’s. In fact, if you were not told that it’s a truck, you would think you’re in a spacious sedan or hatchback. The materials used are soft-touch or well padded, and there are many convenience features. All versions now have rear air-conditioning vents and the rear backrest can be folded down to place items that can’t be left in the exposed cargo bed. Additionally, there are two compartments in the floor as ‘hideaway’ storage areas.

An even safer Ranger
Right from the start, the Ranger has been a leader in safety in the truck segment. For Ford, the lives of the occupants of a truck are no less valuable than those in a passenger car. So even with the first generation, Ford was providing safety features – including airbags – that other trucks didn’t have. This leadership position continues to the latest generation with the more advanced integrated active safety systems being provided (albeit in the Wildtrak only).

The Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) that you see in many cars and SUVs these days are also available in the Ranger Wildtrak. Using a camera and radar, these range from pre-collision warning to automatic emergency braking as well as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping. There is also post-collision braking which brings the vehicle to a faster stop after an accident.

Additionally, Ford has also installed Evasive Steering Assist, a system which complements the Pre-Collision system. If the vehicle is rapidly approaching a stationary vehicle or a vehicle traveling in the same direction, the Evasive Steering Assist system can help the driver steer around the vehicle in a controlled and stable manner. Additional steering torque is applied to help steer around the vehicle. After passing, the system applies steering torque in the opposite direction to encourage a return to the original lane.

There’s also protection for the vehicle in view of it likely to be used in rough off-road conditions. To protect vital components, there are protective underbody shields for the steering, sump, transmission and transfer case. These shields are made from pressed and folded laser-cut steel. The recessed mounting bolts are protected from damage and easy to remove for servicing, and because the shields are bolted directly to the chassis, they add to the structural integrity of the vehicle.

From Model TT to Ranger – the story of Ford trucks

A new generation of the Ford Ranger will be launched in Malaysia soon, and given what we know about the new model from the global debut, it’s destined to continue the success story of its predecessors. But it’s not just the Ranger that is a successful truck model for Ford; in fact, Ford trucks have been dominant in the company’s sales for decades – and the bestselling vehicle in the USA.

Over 100 years of truck experience
Ford knows how to build great trucks because it has a history of making them for more than 100 years. Throughout its history, Ford has continuously improved its trucks with new innovations that improve their ability to get the job done. The cumulative experience means that today’s trucks like the Ranger have superior performance and are more durable and reliable than ever.

1917 Model TT – the first Ford truck.

The first Ford truck was created just 9 years after the first Model T began putting the world on wheels. Henry Ford received requests from customers asking for a vehicle that could carry heavier loads and provide greater utility for the work and deliveries which had been done by horse-carriages.

On July 27, 1917, Ford introduced the Model TT and it was able to bring out this new model so fast because it retained the Model T cab and engine. It was an approach that would be used till today where platforms, including powertrains, are shared among models, with the bodywork being different. The Model TT came with a heavier-duty frame capable of carrying one ton of payload.

Similar to the Fordson tractor introduced in the same year, Ford envisioned a chassis that could accommodate beds and cargo areas that were made by other parties (like today’s commercial vehicle body-builders). By enabling such flexibility to customise the basic design, there would be increased functionality to get work done.

It was a formula for success. By 1928, Ford had sold 1.3 million Model TTs before replacing the truck with the more capable Model AA with a 1.5-ton chassis. Ford marketed its early trucks largely in rural areas, according to Bob Kreipke, a Ford historian. “Model AA trucks in particular had a certain class to them,” he said. “Customers could use them on the farm, yet still take them to church on Sunday.”

Like the Model TT, the Model AA was available exclusively as a chassis cab offered in two lengths, with new powertrain and axle options for greater capacity. To stay ahead in what had become a hotly competitive business, Ford replaced the Model AA with the even more capable Model BB in 1933. Many were outfitted as mail and freight vehicles, as well as ambulances and other types of commercial vehicles. Two years later, Ford introduced the 1935 Model 50 pick-up truck , powered exclusively by its famous Ford Flathead V8 engine.

Making trucks more innovative
By 1941, Ford had sold more than 4 million trucks. Changing over to war production resulted in the loss of consumer sales but a gain in experience building heavy-duty military truck chassis and 4-wheel-drive personnel carriers. A year after consumer production resumed in 1947, Ford drew on that knowledge to provide even more innovations for its customers.

“After the war, a lot of rural Americans moved to urban and suburban centres looking for work, and many took their Ford pick-ups with them,” said Kreipke. “Ford saw this as an opportunity, and began work on the next generation of trucks for 1948 – which came to be known as F-Series Bonus Built trucks.”

After a successful run with the first generation F-Series, the second generation arrived in 1953 with  increased engine power and capacity. The model line was also rebranded, with the F-1 becoming the F-100, while F-2 and F-3 trucks were integrated into the new F-250 line. Meanwhile, the F-4 became F-350 and the larger Class 8 trucks were spun off into a new C-Series commercial truck unit.

Ford trucks became dual-purpose vehicles – for work on weekdays and for family getaways on weekends.

Changing the truck role
Throughout this period, Ford trucks started looking less utilitarian, sporting features like 2-tone paint, automatic transmissions, and improved heater and radio offerings. New standard features debuted with the 1953 F-100, including armrests, dome lights and sun visors. Lower and with a wider cab, the new truck featured integrated front fenders and a more aerodynamic design.

45 years later, in the ASEAN region, the same thing would happen as Ford introduced the Ranger as its idea of the ‘Asian Car’. It came with a stylish look that was rugged, and had the features and convenience of a passenger car. In Malaysia, the timing was just right as local regulations had changed to permit use of trucks as private vehicles rather than only for commercial use.

Built Ford Tough
In 1961 – 44 years after the Model TT – Ford introduced its fourth-generation F-Series. It continued to have innovations that kept it a market leader, eg the revolutionary twin I-beam front suspension which debuted in 1965. An upscale Ranger package appeared in 1967 and advertisements emphasized improved comfort, value and durability, as Ford trucks now offered power steering and brakes, and a lower chassis profile.

Built Ford Tough

By 1977, the F-Series trucks were clear market leaders and sometime that year, a copywriter for a Ford truck magazine is said to have written three simple words that would come to define the brand:  Built Ford Tough. It is more than a slogan – it’s a brand promise to owners and the mantra for Ford’s entire truck team.

Developing truck culture
In the years that followed, truck culture became very much part of American life. Trucks had become universal family vehicles; in addition to being only work trucks during the week, people also used them for weekend getaways. Ford trucks thus made American lifestyle more active and in 2022, the same thing is happening in Malaysia with Sime Darby Auto ConneXion’s ‘Ford Ranger Getaways’.

While the F-Series has been dominant in North America, Ford has also used its truck expertise with the Ranger in other parts of the world. Versatile and efficient, the Ranger has built a reputation for being tough and capable, leading it to thrive in diverse markets around the world.

‘Live The Ranger Life’ celebrates Ford’s pick-up truck evolution into the modern lifestyle machine that it is today

 

Ford’s SuperVan series in Europe began in 1971, and since then, there have been three other SuperVans. This week, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, Ford showed off the fourth Supervan and not surprisingly, it opens the first electrified chapter in the legendary series. The Ford Pro Electric SuperVan uses no petrol and fully utilises the potential of electric performance and enhanced connectivity to achieve the highest performance of any Ford van ever.

Four electric motors, a 50 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack, and a bespoke control system produce approximately 2,000 ps for sub 2-second 0 – 100 km/h acceleration time. Performance from a purpose-built, track-ready chassis including components from the recently unveiled E-Transit Custom 1 – the first fully electric version of Europe’s best-selling van – is complemented by Ford’s SYNC in-cab touchscreen technology 4 from road-going Ford models, as well as additional functionality to control the Electric SuperVan’s unique capabilities.

The enhanced connectivity keeps the driver informed and enables real-time data transmission for remote vehicle management and optimised performance, just like the integrated services that can accelerate the productivity of over 125,000 Ford Pro customers across Europe. Selectable drive modes and regenerative braking technologies similar to those on Ford production electric vehicles also feature.

The striking, all-electric demonstrator vehicle was developed in secret by Ford Performance and electrified rally and racing specialists STARD in Austria, with exterior design work was done by the Ford Design team in Germany.

“We’re bringing SuperVan into the 21st century with 2,000 ps of all-electric power for unmatched excitement and unmistakeable styling inspired by the new E-Transit Custom. But performance isn’t all about horsepower – the Electric SuperVan’s processing power means engineers can use real-time vehicle data to optimise its performance, just like on a top-level racing car,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

“Ford Pro is all about accelerating productivity for our customers – so why not create a new Electric SuperVan that proves the power of electrification and connectivity?” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe. “This incredible demonstrator vehicle takes E-Transit Custom’s advanced engineering and distinctive look to a whole new level, and is high-speed proof of the power of Ford Pro’s connected services ecosystem.”

The Ford Pro Electric SuperVan is a one-off demonstrator, which gave  the Ford Design team a lot of freedom to create a wild-looking vehicle that reflects extreme performance capability. The outlandish wheel arches, muscular style and one-off livery are the most extreme expression of Transit design. Meanwhile, the fully-electric powertrain offered the development team lots of freedom with fewer of the packaging and cooling restrictions that come with a combustion engine.

“The fourth chapter of the SuperVan story is designed to be the fastest, most extreme yet while keeping the Transit DNA. The proportions are a more dramatic version of what we developed for the E-Transit Custom and the front light bar creates a futuristic expression, making the Electric SuperVan the absolute pinnacle of Transit design language. The chance to be part of the iconic SuperVan story and reimagine what it could be in the 21st century was a dream opportunity,” said Amko Leenarts, Director, Design, Ford of Europe.

The vehicle’s motorsport-spec construction marries the E-Transit Custom floorpan with a steel spaceframe and lightweight composite body panels. A bespoke 50 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack is mounted for optimum weight distribution and a low centre of gravity and can be fully recharged in approximately 45 minutes using a standard electric vehicle fast-charger.

A suite of onboard cameras can immerse audiences around the world in the action during SuperVan’s impressive high-performance runs. As on the Ford E‑Transit, the driver can pull camera feeds onto the in-cab screen and switch between them to help position the vehicle.

Ford Performance and STARD’s motorsport input is immediately obvious; the dramatically sculpted body’s front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser would be at home on a racing car, while the radical rear design’s cutaways and dorsal fin flow into the rear wing to generate downforce and push the SuperVan into the track for as much grip as possible.

The latest Supervan continues the tradition started by the first one 51 years ago. That van has a mid-mounted engine taken from the Le Mans-winning Ford GT40. The next Supervan continued with the formula was taken further for SuperVan 2 with a lightened Transit Mk. 2 body draped over the monocoque. It had the 590 ps Cosworth V8 of Ford’s C100 racing car. The Supervan 3 was a facelifted Transit Mk. 3 lookalike, powered by the 650 ps Cosworth HB engine used in Formula 1 cars then.

Evolution of Ford SuperVans

Beyond demonstrating Ford’s advanced electric vehicle and connectivity know-how, the Electric SuperVan is also a high-speed science experiment. Its demanding driving scenarios and unrestricted design concept allow Ford to push the boundaries of electric vehicle engineering and connectivity to improve its future race cars and road-going vehicles, software and services.

Since the late 1990s when the laws on registering pick-up trucks changed and they could be registered for private use, many Malaysians have switched to such vehicles. For many, becoming a truck owner has introduced them to a whole new lifestyle where they can go far off the highway and explore our beautiful countryside.

The Ford Ranger and its more powerful brother, the Ranger Raptor, is among the popular trucks in the market, offering the convenience features of a passenger car and yet being ‘Built Ford Tough’ to be driven over any type of terrain.

Ford Ranger/Raptor Training Experience

The Ranger is certainly a very capable vehicle but not all owners (especially those coming from passenger cars) know how to make use of all its capability. Understanding this, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) organised a Ranger/Raptor Training Experience to provide them with the knowledge and skills to take their vehicle further.

The Ranger/Raptor Training Experience was held in Sepang, Selangor, on a specially prepared course which gave owners the chance to discover the full capabilities of their trucks. By tackling the challenging obstacles created around the course, the owners gained confidence to be able to pilot their vehicle safely in different types of terrain.

The session was part of the Ford Ranger Getaways program which is a community and experiential platform designed to provide owners with a unique experience of ‘Living the Ranger Life’  through a series of local adventures.

Durian buffet coming up next

 In June, the Ford Ranger Getaways will offer an off-road durian adventure to Penang. The 2-in-1 off-road course will begin at Ford Juru outlet on the mainland side and the participants will then head to Jeti Batu Musang at Batu Kawan (also on the mainland). There, they will have the chance to test the limits of their Rangers across various obstacles, with guidance from a professional driving instructor. These include water-wading, jungle track driving, light rock climbing and more.

After the 4×4 experience, they will then head to Green Acres Orchard at Balik Pulau, a well-known spot for durians on the island. Following a short tour of the orchard, the participants can then kick back and savour the all-you-can-eat durian buffet and a hearty lunch. The getaway package is priced at RM976 per vehicle (Rangers only, of course) for a recommended maximum of 4 persons per vehicle.

There will also be other destinations for the Ford Ranger Getaways, designed to let owners and their friends experience 4×4 off-roading as well as have an adventure. There is also one special package which will put them behind the controls of an Airbus A320. No, it won’t be a real one, but the simulator is said to give a very realistic experience and the route programmed is over the virtual skies of Kuala Lumpur.

For those who want the real thing, another package lets them become a pilot for a day. They will be in the cockpit of a small aircraft with a professional pilot guiding them and can get an aerial view of the nation’s capital from around 500 metres up under the guidance of a professional pilot.

‘Ford Ranger Getaways’ by SDAC-Ford provide owners with ways to enjoy their truck to the fullest

Over the 100 years that it has been part of the Ford Group, Lincoln has offered luxury models in the same way that Cadillac has done for General Motors. This year, on its 100th anniversary (it was actually founded in 1917), the company is showing how its products will look as it moves ahead in the new era of electric vehicles (EVs).

The new design language which Lincoln cars of the future will use will maintain the core tenets of beauty, human, gliding and sanctuary. “As Lincoln enters the next chapter in our transition to a zero-emissions future, the Lincoln Star Concept will lead the way for our portfolio of fully electric vehicles. It is an excellent example of how we are redefining luxury for the next generation as we work to transform the vehicle into a third space – a true place of sanctuary – for our clients,” said Joy Falotico, President of Lincoln, when introducing the company’s new concept car.

The new design language is applied inside and out, with thoughtful design details, connected experiences and clever solutions to create the ultimate sanctuary for customers who travel in the Star Concept.

A study of experiences

Whether stationary or in motion, the concept uses design, light, displays, scents and sounds to create an immersive experience for the occupants. Intelligent technology that enhances comfort, productivity and entertainment is deployed throughout to bring the romance of travel back in a uniquely Lincoln way.

The designers worked to create harmony throughout by using light in a modern new way. Illuminated crystallines, plus backlit doors, seats and exterior features elevate the architectural space to create the ultimate sanctuary. The new Lincoln star on the fascia lights up like a jewel – greeting clients upon approach while giving new meaning to the Lincoln Embrace welcome sequence.

The flexible architecture means engineers and designers will be able to reimagine the additional interior space in new and exciting ways.

A reimagined sanctuary
Both in design and colour composition, the interior is uniquely partitioned into first and second-row areas. The entire cabin experience in both rows is premium, with extra-spacious wraparound seating, reclined lounge posture, individual lounge legrests and curated storage for devices and slippers. A luxurious glass beverage chiller is neatly integrated between the back seats.

The feeling of spaciousness is enhanced with 3D-printed metal latticework on the A-pillar along the windshield and the D-pillar at the back window of the Lincoln Star Concept – visible from the inside out. These transparent pillars, along with a full skylight with digital shade, invites natural light in to enhance the open, airy feel of the space.

A full-width curved horizontal display creates a digital panorama in which content flows seamlessly into an integrated centre control screen, then into the second-row screen. New materials such as leather and chrome alternatives and several unique finishes work in harmony to create a modern, luxurious experience.

Three rejuvenation moods join a new Lincoln Embrace sequence harmonizing audio, scenting and lighting throughout the cabin. ‘Boot’ at the front
The area no longer occupied by a combustion engine is converted into a front storage compartment, helping to liberate more space in the cabin. With electro-chromatic glass that changes from transparent to opaque, the front compartment is instantly recognizable, allowing light in when the car is in motion and darkening to hide stored valuables when parked. Underneath, illuminated first-row floors flow uninterrupted into the interior, creating an airy, open cabin.

A wing-shaped floating instrument panel, inspired by aircraft ailerons, emphasizes horizontal balance and equilibrium, while the Lincoln one-touch pedal is used for easy driving. The interior also features Lincoln Attache, a digital briefcase concept with a hidden compartment in the rear coach door that not only provides safe storage of tablets and laptops, but does double duty as a charge pad for devices and can seamlessly detect incoming wireless content. Finally, a reimagined rear cargo space features a lounge mode that transforms into a cozy, indulgent outdoor seat to bring the destination closer.

Lincoln plans to deliver three new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) which will account for more than half of its global volume, and it will add a fourth model by the end of 2026.
