‘Ford Ranger Getaways’ by SDAC-Ford provide owners with ways to enjoy their truck to the fullest

The year started on a low note for the Malaysian car companies as supply issues and the after-effects of the severe floods pushed new vehicle sales down. However, February – normally a low month due to the short working days – proved to be better in spite of the Chinese New Year holidays.

Proton was among the companies that saw sales rebounding, with a 107% increase in sales. The company sold 9,225 units (domestic + export) during the month, which would put it back in second position on the sales chart for 2022. The company estimates that it captured 20.2% in February although for the first two months of the year, the cumulative market share is estimated to be 15.9%.

Top-seller was the X50
The model with the largest sales volume was the X50 with 3,002 units delivered, bringing the total over the first two months of 2022 to 5,603 units. This SUV has been exceptionally popular and Proton reports that over 100,000 bookings have been received in 16 months.

Next was the evergreen Saga, with 2,951 units delivered; while this is less than its usual monthly average, the numbers are expected to return to their previous level in the coming months. The Persona, with 1,675 units delivered, was third on Proton’s chart. The Exora, though having been in the market for quite some time, remains the best buy for anyone wanting a C-segment MPV.

While domestic sales still trail last year’s volumes, export sales are trending upwards and have grown by 72.8% in 2022. For the first two months of the year, 323 units have exported, compared to just 187 units in 2021.

All production lines in operation
With all production lines in operation at the factories in Shah Alam, Selangor and Tanjung Malim, Perak, February’s rebound in sales was a direct result of being able to produce more cars. “This was only made possible by the outstanding joint efforts of our vendors and Proton staff, who worked and continue to work ceaselessly to get us back on track. Thankfully, our order bank remains healthy, and we remain hopeful of catching up to our targets for this year,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.

“As for the Malaysian automotive industry, the first two months of the year has seen strong demand as evidenced by the growth in TIV compared to 2021. This is good news for both car companies and the vendor community and is also testament to the effectiveness of policies set by the government,” he added.

To better serve its customers and enhance sales growth, Proton continues to grow its sales and service network. The 147th 3S/4S outlet was officially opened in Alor Setar today and is the tenth outlet for EON, a leading dealership. It is also the fifth Proton Platinum Showroom in the country.

Addressing customer complaints
“Proton is aware of the issues it faces regarding after sales and parts availability. Our customers have reached out to us, and we deeply regret any inconvenience caused. I would like to reassure them we take every complaint seriously and senior management has identified several bottlenecks and operational issues that require fixing,” Encik Roslan said.

He said that the first step taken to address the availability of parts has been implementation of a mandatory requirement where all dealers are required to have 3 months holding stock of 22 fast-moving parts. “Our central parts centre is also subject to the same requirement, and we hope this will ease waiting times for customers. We are also strengthening the capability and knowledge of our dealers to provide excellent aftersales service to all Proton customers. There is still a lot left to do, but we will give updates on our progress throughout the year,” he added.

Floods do not discriminate, affecting lives in every community and damaging motor vehicles of every kind and brand that are unlucky to be parked where they are submerged as the waters rise. A big bill awaits owners of the vehicles when they finally get them to service centres as it is not a matter of just cleaning the mud and dirt out, but many parts will still have to be replaced.

The bill could come to tens of thousands of ringgit and with other stresses caused from being impacted by the floods, every little bit of help will be meaningful. For those who own Porsches, Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP) is offering a helping hand.

The company will assist in having the vehicles towed at no charge to to the nearest Porsche Centre in Malaysia. Porsche Roadside Assistance, which includes towing services, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide towing and roadside assistance.

Once at the service centre, a thorough and detailed assessment will be done along with personalised consultation with certified specialists to evaluate the damages and repairs required and the cost involved. This cost will be lower than usual as SDAP is offering a 30% discount on parts and labour for flood-affected vehicles brought to the authorised service centres up till January 31, 2022. Only Porsche Genuine Parts are used in all repairs which include a 2-year parts warranty.

“We are committed to our customers by offering a thorough and detailed check of their vehicle as well as discounts on parts and labour costs to ensure all Porsche cars run at optimal performance. With this gesture, we hope to provide some consolation during these trying times,” said Christopher Hunter, CEO of Sime Darby Auto Performance.

Honda Malaysia has introduced an upgraded range of Genuine Engine Oils, recommended specially for Honda vehicles, of course. The oil now has an API SP grade which provides stable performance and better fuel economy while prolonging engine lifespan as well as offers greater engine protection.

The new engine oil will replace the existing SN Grade range with mineral (Bronze), semi-synthetic (Silver) and fully synthetic (Gold) formulations. However, the SN grade 0W-30 viscosity fully-synthetic oil will still be available for cars with high performance engines such as the Civic Type R.

Suitable to be used for most petrol and turbocharged engines, the SP Grade engine oil is approved and recommended by Honda Research & Development (R&D). The new engine oil range is formulated to fulfil all operating requirements of Honda engines and also meet the latest standards issued by the American Petroleum Institute (API). It enhances protection against low-speed pre-ignition, an abnormal combustion phenomenon that can cause significant damage to the engine.

The SP Grade engine oil also comes with a timing chain wear protection to minimise timing chain elongation. In addition to improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, it provides better sludge and varnish control, valve train and intake lifter wear protection, higher oxidation stability as well as emission control system protection. The lower-viscosity of 0W-20 fully-synthetic oil allows the engine to operate with maximum efficiency while very good protection for key engine components, even at extreme temperatures.

More information on the new Honda engine oil is available at any authorised Honda service centre, or at www.honda.com.my.

Why use a Genuine Oil?
There are engine oils and there are Genuine Oils but to the average motorist, it is hard to understand what can be so special about Genuine Oils sold by some car companies. It may seem like such products are created just to give the car company an extra source of revenue by using the brand name. After all, an oil is an oil, right? As long as it is from a reputable producer and meets the requirements of the carmaker (specified in the Owner’s Manual), it should be okay to use.

You won’t go wrong picking an oil produced by any of the reputable oil companies, but you may not get 100% lubricating performance with the engine in your vehicle. This is because each engine has its own characteristics and design features; some may have unique combustion chamber designs, more complex valvetrains or special oil passages. These are known to the engineers who design the engines but may not be understood by those in the oil companies who try to come up with an oil which ‘suits all engines’.

This is where the specifications for a Genuine Oil come in and they may have specific requirements to ensure proper lubrication in certain areas. In other words, the Genuine Oil will have a unique formulation which will work best with the engine for which it is recommended, and it will perform better than other oils [for that engine].

More customized for specific engines
The best analogy to this issue would be to think of clothes. You can go to a department store and buy a shirt with a famous brand name. You may get a choice of S/M/L/XL and one of the sizes will fit your body. Maybe you will be lucky and the sleeves will also be just the right length and the collar is not too tight. However, it is also possible that your arms may be just a wee bit longer and the sleeve length for size ‘M’ is not exactly matching for you.

Now you could also go to a tailor and made a shirt with a similar design but you would be able to have the sleeves just the right length to suit your arm and the collar will be comfortable instead of choke you each time you have to wear a tie. You feel comfortable wearing the shirt and its ‘specifications’ are exclusive to you.

That is basically the difference between a Genuine Oil and other oils: customization. While it may be that 99% of engine designs are similar, there may still be that 1% which is unique to each engine and only a Genuine Oil would be able to cover the lubrication needs of that 1% so you get optimum performance.

This is not to say you must use only Genuine Oil for your vehicle and that other oils are not good enough. As a consumer, you always have choices but as a Honda owner, if you want to give your vehicle the best at all times, then Honda Genuine Engine Oil would be the best to use.

Honda Insurance Plus owners can get up to RM1,500 allowance if their vehicle was damaged by floods

The floods have affected thousands around Malaysia and for many families, there will be big expenditures ahead as they repair and replaced damaged property, not to mention the tiring job of cleaning up houses that were flooded with muddy water. And then there will also be the costs of repairing cars that were flooded; as you will have seen in pictures, it’s not just vehicles parked at home but also some that were on roadsides and got submerged.

The repair costs can run to many thousands and electronic systems that need to be replaced will be expensive. Not to mention the fact that the vehicle, even after being cleaned, is likely to have a smell and might just not feel the same.

To help relieve some of the stresses and reduce expenses, a number of car companies are offering assistance to their customers. The latest to announce such an initiative is Proton, which will offer a 20% discount on selected parts as well as a 20% discount on labour charges for all customers  affected by the flood who have lodged a police report regarding the incident. Additionally, towing charges of up  to RM200 as well as cleaning charges for the exterior and engine bay up to RM100 will also be borne by the  company.

“Exceptional circumstances require an exceptional response. Proton will be working hard to ensure we can  repair cars as quickly as possible and advise all affected customers to visit our authorised service centres to  enjoy these benefits. Furthermore, our genuine parts are offered with a warranty so they can be assured of the  quality of the repairs,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.

Although Proton has a factory in Tg. Malim, Perak, its original factory is still operating in Shah Alam, near to where much of the flooding has occurred. According to Encik Roslan, the company has been lucky the production lines were spared from any flooding. However, more than 1,000 of its staff have been affected so the company is mobilising Kelab PROTON, an  in-house social and wellbeing organisation for all staff, to create care packages and offer clean up assistance to them and their families.

Encik Roslan advises those who require assistance and information on vehicle repairs to call PROTON’s customer care line at 1-800-88-8398.
