In spite of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) was able to achieve a higher sales volume during it its last financial year (FY21: April 2021 – March 2022). The total volume of 19,217 units was a 66% increase compared to the volume sold in the same period when the Total Industry Volume of the Malaysian market declined by 6.7%. This achievement put the company comfortably in the top 3 spots of the non-national automotive category.

The Triton pick-up truck was the bestseller for the brand with 9,420 units sold in FY21, which was a 24% increase compared to FY20. Its popularity among Malaysians was evident as it maintained a market share of around 21.4%.

The XPANDER was also a strong seller and the dominant model in the non-national MPV segment. 9,065 units of the locally-assembled 7-seater were sold, accounting for 47.2% to the company’s overall total sales.

“In general, the past 2 years have been tough on the automotive industry, not only with the rising cases of Omicron COVID-19 but floods that affected the Klang Valley and East Coast region, as well as parts or chips shortage. There were many hurdles for the industry to overcome, thus for our sales performance to grow is a significant triumph for us. We take this chance to thank the Malaysian government for initiating and extending the SST exemption these last couple of years. With this, our customers could enjoy extra savings while it also gives us the time to fulfil all booking orders made,” said Shinya Ikeda, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The Mitsubishi Motors network consists of 54 showrooms (out of which 49 are 3S Centres) and 55 service outlets throughout Malaysia. In East Malaysia, there are 14 showrooms (7 in Sarawak and 7 in Sabah). The present range consists of the Triton which is imported as a CBU (Completely Built-Up) model from Thailand, and the XPANDER MPV which is assembled locally.

The American state of Texas is huge and it follows that everything there is also ‘XXL’ in size. It’s also where the Mammoth 1000 6×6 TRX has been designed, engineered and built by Hennessey, the hypercar manufacturer and high-performance vehicle creator. The Mammoth is the company’s biggest ever truck with a length of 7.2 metres, width of 2.2 metres and standing almost 2.1 metres tall.

The enormous 6×6 pickup truck makes ordinary cars and trucks look small – and we’re talking about American models. It starts life as a Dodge Ram TRX pick-up and Hennessey then adds a load of off-road kit from locking rear axles and Bilstein suspension, to 20-inch wheels clad in 37-inch off-road tyres. A third axle is added, extending the truck’s length by more than 1.2 metres feet and creating a giant load-space.

Under the chest-height bonnet is a mighty 6.2-litre Dodge Hellcat V8 engine which, even in standard form, is already quite a beast. The Hennessey team then adds a high-flow 2.65-litre supercharger, fuel injectors and high-flow induction system alongside performance-boosting calibration to push output to 1,012 bhp/1,314 Nm.

The latest Isuzu D-MAX is clearly a winner for Isuzu Malaysia, having set a national sales record last month with 1,233 units delivered around the country. That was the company’s highest ever monthly sales since being established in 2005. The new figure eclipses the previous record of 885 units recorded in December 2014 following the introduction of the D-MAX 3-litre V-Cross.

Although the industry has been facing difficulties in getting enough vehicle stocks, Isuzu Malaysia was fortunate to get a large shipment of vehicles which enabled it to address the backlog of orders that began almost from the time the third generation model was launched.

According to the Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia, Kenkichi Sogo, the boost in deliveries allowed the company to relieve some of the customers’ waiting time for their new vehicles. “Our customers depend on Isuzu vehicles to serve them faithfully so, as a customer-centric brand, our priority was to hasten supply to meet the increased demand for this highly-popular and versatile pick-up truck,” he said. “I wish to thank our customers who have eagerly and patiently waited for their brand new Isuzu D-Max. We hope to continue ramping up supplies over the coming months to further reduce the waitlist for our vehicles.”

The increased supply that was achieved through additional allocation from the factory meant that the top variant delivered in March was of the 1.9-litre Premium Auto variant, with close to 350 units. The Premium Auto variant offers stylish design, excellent driving performance, premium interior features and the lowest roadtax in its segment, which is why it is the popular choice.

Demand for the flagship X-Terrain variant was also met with an increase of 163 deliveries. However, this version is one of the most popular globally and so supplies have been limited. It has advanced safety and comfort features which can be compared to passenger cars, so it is ideal for personal use as well as workhose duties when needed.

The strong performance in March would have pleased the company’s new CEO, Shunsuke Okazoe, who emphasises the need to prioritize customer satisfaction through improved sales and aftersales efforts. In the late 1990s, licensing regulations for the use of pick-up trucks changed allowing them to be registered for private use like passenger cars. 2021 Isuzu D-MAX 4th Generation

A new generation of the Ford Ranger may have been announced but it’s not going to be available in Malaysia for a while and in the meantime, for those who want to get a proven pick-up truck, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) offers a Ford Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition. Priced from RM136,888 (excluding insurance), the Special Edition is now open for booking.

The Ranger XLT Plus Special Edition gets enhanced exterior and interior features that not only differentiate it but also provide extra  convenience. The front end features the Ford Block-Letter Front Grille design that gives a bolder appearance, while more pronounced fender flares add to the muscular image. Should you get one now?
Some may feel that getting a model at the end of its life cycle is pointless when a new one is just round the corner. But that’s not always true and there are some benefits too. Some may prefer the current design, and that’s a personal preference. A model in its final years may also have just about everything the engineers and product planners can put in, and the cumulative improvements made over the life of the model. So, in a way, it could be the best of the generation and often, there may also be a reduced price as an incentive.

‘Ford Ranger Getaways’ by SDAC-Ford provide owners with ways to enjoy their truck to the fullest

Pick-up trucks are big business in the US market and have been top-sellers for decades. Their popularity made the Ford F-Series the bestselling vehicles on the planet (though almost entirely sold in North America). While the Big Three – GM, Ford and Chrysler – have long dominated this segment of the market, newcomers from foreign brands like Toyota and Nissan have also made inroads but the American trucks are still firmly entrenched.

Now comes the next wave of competitors in the segment and they are not only entirely new players like Tesla, EdisonFuture, Canoo and Rivian but they are also starting off with electrically-powered trucks so they are positioning themselves for the future. Ford and GM are already on the starting line as well with their own fully electric pick-ups that have seen soaring orders – to the extent that Ford had to stop taking orders for its new F-150 Lightning.

Most of the products of the new players are not in the market yet but have been shown at motorshows and drawn tremendous response. Orders are flooding in for vehicles that will begin to reach customers later this year and in coming years. Clearly, American buyers are receptive to the idea of electrically powered trucks even though, traditionally, such vehicles have had huge engines to give them their workhorse capabilities.

As EV technology is still developing and evolving, there are many approaches being taken and some are innovations too. One of the innovative new trucks is from a start-up called EdisonFuture. It’s a 2-year old company established and based in California but if you follow the ownership trail, it will lead back across the Pacific to China’s SPI Energy.

The Chinese company also owns Phoenix Motorcars, which has specialised in developing medium-duty electric vehicles for commercial markets over the past two decades. So EdisonFuture is already starting off with access to substantial technological resources for developing its products which are trucks.

EdisonFuture is working on at least two models, both of which have been shown in concept form. The first is the EF1-T which has a solar charging capability which will provide up to 55 kms of range per day. The integrated solar panel over the vehicle can be pulled out over the rear bed and locked into place to protect the contents. The unique panel is called ‘Armadillo Armour’ and presumably has a tough construction.

Utilizing the same chassis and platform of EF1-T, the EF1-V Delivery Van is a robust and modern multi-purpose van. It can be used for work as well as travel or personal use in varying road and environment conditions from city streets to off-road.

As it functions as a delivery van, the EF1-V is given an enclosed body with sliding side doors and varying cargo volumes within a space-efficient container that is almost 2 metres long. The entire top of the cargo box is covered with solar panels so the battery pack can be recharged while parked.

EdisonFuture will offer three different powertrains to suit different requirements with either one, two or three motors. Power and torque outputs have not been revealed yet but there is a claim of up to 725 kms on a fully charged battery pack for the tri-motor version. There will also be a choice of battery packs up to 180 kWh.

Since appearing at the Los Angeles Auto Show late last year, EdisonFuture has seen encouraging response though most of it has been for the pick-up rather than the delivery van. Perhaps there are also proven and cost-effective electric vans already in the market and fleet operators are satisfied with them, and expect to keep them in use for a while longer.

The designs that were shown are still conceptual and works in progress. Icona Design, an Italian group, has been brought on board to collaborate on the exterior design of the two vehicles. As the production models won’t be on sale till 2025, there will still be time to get feedback at motorshows and from fleet operators to get the design right.

Canoo unveils fully electric pick-up truck with production to start in 2023

These days, many people carry around powerbanks to recharge their devices, mainly mobilephones, when necessary. The invention of the powerbank has certainly made it possible to have an electrical supply available wherever you go, and it is small enough to be in your pocket or handbag.

Now imagine the same idea being applied to providing an entire home with emergency power supply. Of course, the little powerbank in your pocket won’t be enough unless it’s like the nuclear powerbank that was used by The Terminator (in ‘Rise of The Machines’)! Instead, the portable ‘powerbank’ is a truck which can store a large amount of electricity in its battery pack and share it with a home.

With the new electrically-powered F-150 Lightning pick-up truck, Ford is the first in the USA to offer this ability for vehicle owners to power their homes when the power supply is cut, which could happen during a natural disaster in the area. It gives energy independence to houseowners and also provides emergency power for rescuers in remote areas.

This independence is important: according to the US Energy Information Administration, Americans experienced the most power interruptions on record in 2020. With F-150 Lightning, homeowners can use their truck to maintain their routines during brief or extended outages.

Ford is partnering with Sunrun, the country’s leading solar company, to enhance home energy management, making use of the substantial onboard battery capability of the F-150 Lightning. Sunrun will be the preferred installer of F-150 Lightning home charging solutions, including the 80A  Ford Charge Station Pro and Home Integration System. This enables the vehicle to store and supply power to homes in a variety of ways.

Ford Intelligent Backup Power, making its debut on F-150 Lightning, gives owners the ability to use bidirectional power technology from their truck to provide energy to their homes during an outage, whether sheltering in a storm or keeping cool in a heat wave.

The extended-range battery system can store 131 kilowatt-hours of energy and deliver up to 9.6 kilowatts of power in a cleaner, quieter, more efficient way versus petrol-powered generators, and with greater capacity than many wall battery units. The  F-150 Lightning can also offer lower-cost energy storage in a product of their own – their truck.

With the Sunrun-installed system in place and the F-150 Lightning plugged in, the system automatically kicks in to power the home if the power supply is cut. Once power is restored, the system automatically reverts back to utility power. Based on an average American home at 30 kilowatt-hours of use per day, an F-150 Lightning with its extended-range battery can provide full home power for up to 3 days, or as long as 10 days when used in conjunction with solar power or rationing. Of course, that assumes that the owner doesn’t drive the truck around during that time.

In the future, Ford will introduce additional features to help customers potentially save money and take pressure off the public electric supply during peak usage. Ford Intelligent Power, for example, will allow vehicle owners to power their homes with their truck’s battery when electricity rates are higher, while charging the truck when rates are lower – or from their own solar-powered rooftop. This load shift can also help buffer the load on the nation’s grid and help reduce the use of higher carbon energy without affecting daily routines or charging schedules.

“F-150 Lightning brings new innovations to customers, including the ability to power their homes when they need it most,” said Matt Stover, Ford charging and energy services director. “Teaming up with Sunrun leverages their expertise to bring solar power to even more customers, giving them the chance to turn their truck into an incredible energy storage source – and future truck features can help accelerate the development of a less carbon-intensive grid.”

In less than a year in the Malaysian market, the new D-Max X-Terrain has received no less than 5 ‘Pick-up Truck of the Year’ titles. These have come from media titles such as Carplus, Carlist, DSF.my, Rider ATH and Wapcar, which picked the Isuzu as the worthy title-holder for its impressive ability to bring the pick-up truck experience to a whole new level.

8,000 units targeted for 2022

We are hoping that the supply disruptions can be alleviated soon in order for us to fulfill the demand for this new truck,” said Mr. Sogo. “We expect that once supply is regulated, we will be able to double the deliveries and achieve our target of selling 8,000 units this year.”

Growing popularity for the Mitsubishi Triton and XPANDER saw the total sales volume of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) increasing in 2021. The company today announced that 17,489 vehicles from January to December 2021, a 91% increase compared to the same period in 2020.

With 7,397 units delivered nationwide, the XPANDER MPV had its best sales performance since being launched. This volume also made it the best-selling 7-seater Japanese crossover in Malaysia. The model is assembled locally at the DRB-HICOM manufacturing complex in Pekan, Pahang.

“We are pleased that XPANDER has enjoyed strong sales performance thanks to the extension of the tax-free incentive period. This decision by the Malaysian government has certainly helped the industry to sustain itself during this challenging phase. At Mitsubishi Motors, we have now progressed to increase our production volume for XPANDER, to cater for higher production capacity, and to fulfill all booking demands,” said Shinya Ikeda, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.

The Triton, currently in its fifth generation, also continued to be among the more popular pick-up trucks in the country. In spite of the challenging market conditions, MMM’s dealers delivered 9,268 units in Peninsular and East Malaysia in 2021, 34% more than in 2020.

“The continued growth of Mitsubishi Motors market compared to last year is a sign that we are steadily moving towards recovery. As we look forward to advancing and progressing into 2022, we have heard every customer’s feedback regarding our products and services, and we will continue to improve for an ownership experience of the highest standard,” he added.

Mr. Ikeda also said that MMM is offering support to Mitsubishi owners whose vehicles were damaged by the floods. “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt sympathy to all who were affected by the recent flood incidents. We are here to support them, and they can get assistance by contacting our Customer Careline,” he said.

MMM is offering  a 30% discount on Mitsubishi genuine spare parts and a 50% discount on labour costs (for flood-damaged vehicles serviced at authorised Mitsubishi Motors dealerships) until January 20, 2022. In addition, the company will also support owners by offering free towing service. All customers need to do is to contact Mitsubishi Assist 24Hrs customer careline (MA24) at 1-800-88-2166 to request for this service. Mitsubishi owners who arrange for their vehicle towing, without the assistance of MA24 and insurance coverage, are also entitled to rebates worth up to RM300.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia offers free/subsidised towing services to vehicle owners affected by floods

With Ford having revealed their next generation of the Ranger pick-up truck, Volkswagen is also releasing more details and images of its new Amarok. Why, you may wonder, is Volkswagen associated with Ford’s model reveal? It’s because the two carmakers have been working together on their new pick-up trucks. Ford had previously been collaborating with Mazda for its earlier Rangers, with Mazda’s version known as the BT-50. However, the two companies decided to end that collaboration and Mazda has teamed up with Isuzu, while Ford teamed up with Volkswagen.

Like the Ford-Mazda collaboration, a similar arrangement is now with the German carmaker’s Commercial Vehicles subsidiary. Just how much each party contributes is not known, just as it was never known with Ford and Mazda which had worked together since the first Ranger in the mid-1990s. However, Ford probably brings much truck expertise to the collaboration since it has been making such vehicles for more than 100 years, and it also makes the bestselling truck on the planet (albeit largely in North America).

Volkswagen has not had a strong presence in the truck market and even back in the 1990s, it was taking the Toyota Hilux and rebadging it to sell as a Volkswagen Taro. It developed its own model, the Amarok, ten years ago but that has not made a big impact in the time it has been in the market (over 800,000 sold globally). Now, with the new model to be adapted from the new Ranger, Volkswagen will have a more capable truck to sell. The carmaker is certainly expecting it to impress with numerous innovations.

New Amarok to be built at Ford plant
The Ranger was mainly developed in Australia and Volkswagen adds that there were also project teams in Europe. The Ford models will be built at two production hubs – in Thailand and in South Africa – and Volkswagen says its product will be built in South Africa (at Ford’s plant) as well in Pacheco, Argentina, where the current generation is built. Volkswagen has plant in South Africa as Uitenhage but it is not set up as a truck plant (it makes only the Polo and Cross Polo). Incidentally, Mazda’s new BT-50 is also made at the Isuzu plant in Thailand rather than the original facility which is jointly owned with Ford.

This is considered as the third generation and unless Volkswagen plans on entering more markets with the new Amarok, it will be sold in considerably less than the 180 markets the Ranger is in. It is mainly on sale in South America, Europe, South Africa, Mongolia and  there are plans to sell it in North America.

The new Amarok will be built at Ford’s factory in South Africa (above) which was upgraded this year for the new Ranger. Another production site will be at Volkswagen’s factory in Argentina (below) which builds the current Amarok.

Premium truck
To go on sale in late 2022, the new Amarok is presented as a premium truck and will have ‘clear Volkswagen DNA’, the company stresses. This probably refers largely to aesthetics and perhaps some specific equipment or features. The new vehicle has significantly more driver assistance systems and connectivity than before, which the Ranger is already well known for.

As is the case with shared models, the designers can only individualise areas like the lights and grille, and perhaps some of the bodywork as many of the structural ‘hard points’ are fixed. To alter them means additional engineering work and cost, defeating the benefit of joint development.

The new Amarok will get Volkswagen DNA at the front end and looks a lot more muscular than the model it will replace (below).

‘X design’ and Volkswagen DNA
In the case of the Amarok, Volkswagen is giving it a striking front end with defining ‘X design’, according to Albert-Johann Kirzinger, Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “We’ve given the strength and power of the new Amarok an unambiguous expression – with clear Volkswagen DNA, inside and out.”

“The Amarok makes possible what in many places appears impossible at first sight: it makes things easier for its users by assisting them in their work and everyday lives,” said Dr. Lars Krause, Brand Board of Management Member for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “That’s because the Amarok provides solutions that enable our customers to achieve their goals – especially when things get difficult.”
